hi guyz...just wondering about michael shields..i have seen the pics of him and he looks to be tank....but what i want to know..and im sure the people who went to the training wouldve seen. is he really fast and is his kicking action fluent and is his disposal resonable

I haven't seen him, but I think it was Bluegal that said at the moment he has an awckward grip on the ball and therefore kicking style. In another post it was said that he is known for his hardness and not his speed, so I doubt that he would be super quick.

what position do you guys reckon he'd be able to slot into considering what you've heard about him?

Sounds and looks like a small running defender, with strength and a lot of grunt.

Not the fastest guy you'll see, but going by his time trial, he isn't in too bad shape in that regard.

Apparently is as tough as nails so won't be worried in the slightest if he needs to put his body on the line.

*reads Alan Didak into opposition player*

*reads any collingwood player into opposition player*

Seeing Didak the **** ironed out flat with a hip and shoulder similar to what he did to Scotland a couple of years back would be nice :)

Talk about putting the cart before the horse.

Aisake and Shields haven't even played AFL yet and you're calling them hard men who will iron players out.

Can they even play?

Players like Cloke, Didak, Brown, Cotchin and Franklin will turn them inside out and kick a goal on them.

I'm more excited about the potential of Walker, Hartlett, Anderson and maybe Edwards to be the tough nuts we need.

Kennedy would have been a definite.

Anderson v Thomas might be on the cards next year.

Fev got Didak this year, but Rocca did more damage to Fraser in that game. :thumbsu: :p :D

There aren't too many around that would turn Shields inside out. Remember he comes from a game where you can't just grab an opposition player when he has possession. You have to be smart and agile to prevent him scoring.

I'll have to take your word for it.

But those players are good enough to make quality defenders who grew up playing football look silly on the field.

Judd does it all game long.

Shields relishing Aussie challenge

Cork defender Michael Shields is determined to give his 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity Down Under everything as he aims to secure a contract with the Carlton Blues.

As setantasports.com revealed several weeks ago, the 21-year-old UCC student left for Australia after receiving advice from Cork hurler Séan Og O hAilpín.

Shields is staying at the Melbourne-based club with O' hAilpin's two younger brothers, Setanta and Aisake, in an attempt to make his transition as seamless as possible.

But the former youth soccer star appears to have taken well to the oval ball code.

"It's great to be here," Shields told the Irish Examiner.

"In Ireland we are not professional, and to train with a professional team is brilliant. I am really enjoying it, and getting to know the lads as well is good. It's good craic.

"I just think it's a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come over for three weeks, so I will give it my best shot and hopefully, if things work out, I will be able to get a two-year rookie contract and take it form there."

Shields was courted by Carlton general managers Steve Icke after he impressed Aussie scouts in Cork's All Ireland defeat to Kerry.

Icke travelled to Cork to meet the youngster's family and convinced his parents that he should consider a career in the AFL.

However, a source close to the player revealed to setantasports.com that Shields was reticent to make the move as he is currently in the final year of his studies in Cork.

A solution was found, and Shields was lured to Carlton by the offer of a three-week trial, with a view to taking up a two-year rookie contract after Christmas.
