Mick Malthouse Future?

With the Pies having a shocker of a year this year,for whatever reasons,do we think that if we have a similar year next year,would the coach come under fire?Im hoping thats not the case & that we have a great season,but was keen on your thoughts.Im not really aware of his contract status,but that means very little these days!I do think some of his coaching moves this year were hard to figure out!

I for one never doubt Mick Malthouse.
The guys record speaks for itself. Apart from the years where he rebuilt the magpies (they still improved every year) 2004 was his forst bad year as coach.
He always had west coast either heading towards the top, at the top or hovering around the top.
So i think we'r jumping the gun doubting Mick. Take our injuries last season into account... he also gave our young guys plenty of time, which can only be good in the long run.
Mick malthouse... I have faith!

I believe Mick has super-over-driven our list into the GFs. The era stuff is still to come. Some tough super-defensive choices slowly need undoing as the new lot of burst-players arrive. Given the once proposed super-manager role for Eade, and the now increased midfield coach role for Buckley, has Mick got only a couple of years in the tank? I don't know if Buckley has the toughs in him to succeed. Would be good, but T Shaw call-me-mates-with-boys isn't a good precedent.

Malthouse is no exception. As well as the players, he's had a bad year and his "fat arsed insider" recruiting policy went fat arse up!

But I've seen Mick in this position before. Start of '02, he was in a coaching rut and saw the need to reinvent himself and took faith in some of the younger guys. The end of year results spoke for themselves.

Again, I think we're already seeing the signs of the reinvention. I'm still against McGough and Mullins being dropped ahead of Williams and Lokan, but all in all, we'll come out on top after this trading period, with a quicker, more skilled list (at least in the medium term, hopefully the short).

It's just up to Malthouse now, to show the faith he showed in early '02 and allow the likes of Didak, Johnno and Cole to take on more responsibility and add freshness alongside the dependable six footers.

i really couldnt see us having as bad a year this year as we did last year.

Even if we did have the amount of injuries we had last year, i think our list has more depth this year than this time last year, and would be able to handle themselves a little bit better than we did this year.

That said, we'd have to be very damn unlucky to have the injuries next season like we did last season. And with the additions of morrisson (and hopefully caracella) we should be in a very good position to take a crack at it again. Think there'll be alot of competition for places going on this year, and if we get a big year from a few of our KPPs' (rocca, tarrant, clement, wakelin), along with one or 2 of our midfielders (wether it be licuria, johnson, burns, buckley, morrisson, or even didak or davis) we should be set for a rebound year.

I honestly believe the only acceptable result in 2005 is the 2002 result or better. MM has had 5 years with the best picks as they have grown through the years from 1999/2000/2001.

My own belief is that if we don't make top four MM must offer his resignation, whether accepted or not is upt o the Board.

You're quite right, but I think he has at least recognised this and made moves to do something about it with the types we have drafted for this year. His apparent stubborness has been criticised in the past, but in this case he seems to have acted reasonably promptly. I think he's pretty safe for now.

He can only do the best with what hes got guys...and in reality our list isnt crash hot, it would be unrealistic to want a premiership next year with the players we have. Starts such as burns and buckley are ageing, our young players seem to be ok but not in the same class as a stkilda or freo...this is due to finishing around the top half of the bottom half of the 8 for so many years and finishing runners up twice. When you compare our lists with brisbane, freo, port, stkilda and the eagles we are along way off them in terms of talented players. So we should just hope for a top 6 finish and if we some how manage to win our way into the grandfinal then that will be a bonus. But don't say we should sack malthouse or he should resign if we dont do better than 2002 or 2003. Hes the best coach currently available and one of the best in the business so give him a break...i do think noel judkins recruiting can be criticised though ...the man is ******** house

The problem, with those that advocate that MM should go is that they have only thought through half of the issue.
We can't simply go out to the back of the Lexus centre and pick a new coach off the "Coaches Tree".

I can't believe this crap. Please excuse the language but these comments are unbelieveable, if every club had this mentallity there would be no coaches as who would want a job for 1 or 2 years only to be sacked?

Mick Malthouse is a great coach and some of his moves were hard to figure out but he had to make the most out of what he had.

I am NOT saying replace him NOW December 2004, I am saying if next year is a bad year then his role needs reviewing.

Look at the players we have, MM has been in control of our Football Department since late 1999. That is 5 years ago as of now. He oversaw the drafting and recruiting that has gone on in that time.... the Buck must stop with him, if not then are you telling me Judkins is in control of our destiny?

MM has won 2 Premierships and lost 3. At the Eagles the longer he stayed the worse they got, as I said give him next year to prove he can still work his Magic.

Yeah it's a toughie, with the new facilities and all we can't be having years like 04 regularly. But really MM is an awesome coach, and i'll be suprised if we're not top 4 again next year barring many injuries or suspensions of course, but if we still finish down the bottom with a full list, he may have a few sleepless nights...but who knows, Eddie loves him and the majority of Collingwood fans to do. If we finish bottomish 05 and 06 then he'd have to seriously consider resigning.

Micks position at Collingwood is rock solid. Would not think off replacing him with anyone else in the caper at this point in time and this year was nothing more then a case of being plagued by injury. We lacked some depth because of the obvious change in direction with a slight emphasis on getting the next generation of kids on board. Next year Richards,CCloke, Rowe, Walker will all play senior footy and some short term pain was inevitable.

McGuire and Malthouse are a formidable combination and i have nothing but confidence that as long as they are both around we will continue to be an absolute superpower.

He will know when it is time to go.
When that time comes Bucks will have done his apprenticeship and be ready to take over.

Any coach who cannot fire up Rocca & Tarrant, and Gehrig and Riewoldt when they are fully fit should not be a coach anyway. I think TD's services are overrated, otherwise he would have a permanent senior position by now.

Communication and the ability to create a strong rapport with the playing group are TD's strengths IMO. He did a lot of work with Tarrent and Gehrig is consecutive seasons and they both had stellar years.
