He's a Carlton man now, it's his job to look after their interests. It would be remiss of him not to do so.

There are ways of doing and saying things. In my opinion he saw an opportunity to have a dig which confirms my belief that part of his motivation is revenge.

I wouldn't worry about Cloke Jmac, he was never going to leave you guys. As a young footballer, you really can't blame him for trying to get the best deal he can, while he's still got some value.

Trust me I am a Cloke supporter and have many "discussions" on the subject with fellow Magpie fans. I also think that he will stay and that Mick was tossing the first grenade. He is a combative coach and it will be interesting to see how Bucks deals with him next year. I am confident in Buck's ability to counter him though.

If I was a Blues fan this is exactly what I would be worried about. Its basically all on the line in the next 2 years or bust. As you say good clubs like Sydney & the Cats are looking 5-10 years ahead not 1-2 years. Its a gamble and I would be worried about the long term consequences if it didn't pay off.

Financially its a massive investment in what is a short term arrangement as he isn't going to be a 5-10 year coach - unlike the Bombers setup. If the club was completely screwed up maybe it was a good move to tear it down and start again - which Mick will do, he will want it done his way. The best thing he will do is change the culture of the club and hopefully for the long term and if he doesn't win a flag I would expect he would at least leave that behind.

MM is a brilliant coach and has a hard edge that maybe Ratten didn't. He will have some form of success as the list isn't a bottom 10 list. I would expect by year 2 he will have reshaped the club & will be very competitive injury permitting. However, if things don't quite work out & at the end of year 2 & there is no flag to show what does the club do? Hird & Thompson showed you can have the best coaching setup & resources yet still fall short. If it was MM at the Bombers 2 years in like them would they be resigning him for a 4th & 5th year, I wouldn't think so.

If at the end of 2 years do they let him have one last crack at it and hope for the best and worry about a start from scratch rebuild in year 4 if it happens - another new start. Or do they bite the bullet (like most clubs do) and start rebuilding early to avoid a complete bottom out. The problem for MM is there is no time for a bottom out or a rebuild and this puts the club in an awkward position because they need to think not just about the next year but where they want to be long term. So if no flag at the end of year 2 its time to start looking at other coaching options - Paul Roos anyone?

Financially....it will pay for itself extra memberships, marketing/sponsorship it will bring in millions.

How do any of us know what will happen at the end of 2 or 3 years, we may extend his tenure or a more than capable assistant takes over..

You lot are all doom and gloom over Mick joining Carlton just to suit your own agenda's....the big black and white nose is out of joint big time !

I don't have a problem with you getting Mick. It would have been nice though if he could have refrained from sticking the knife in re Cloke. It has been a pretty flat week for our club.

He was asked the question from a female journo and he responded.

How is that sticking the knife in?

It will be the classic "Master v Apprentice" encounter. Looking forward to it already. Can probably add an extra 15/20k to the crowd.

I think any sympathy we may have had for you would have dissappeared when Eddie opened his pie hole in about round 10 a difficult time for our club. Of course he was just answering a question.

While MM may be bitter and twisted about being sacked I don't believe his motivation is revenge (that is a fringe benefit) the reason he is coaching is because in his mind, his time as a coach is not up and wasn't ready to be turfed out for someone with no coaching experience.

I believe he could have been a little more "diplomatic" in his response. As I said earlier, he is combative by nature and enjoyes playing mind games. This will be the first of many missiles tossed between our two clubs over the coming seasons.

Just my opinion. Only Mick knows the truth.

Oh and he wasn't sacked...he walked out.

Totally disagree.

I would suggest that if 16 other coaches were asked the same question, they would have answered with a similar response.

FWIW I think Cloke will stay at the Pies.

Speaking of being dimplomatic, your President fails miserably.

I am also looking forward to the coming seasons between our Clubs.

Bring it on !!!

You are missing the point of the appointment altogether. What you have to understand is that this isn't a rebuild, its a finishing off. We are five years into the rebuild, the window was perceived to open this year but it was a disaster for whatever reason and the powers that be decided that the coach was not the man to take us through that window. So they got someone they believed could.

As for the investment, they have the money and they can't spend it on players because of the cap so why not use it on a coach? Especially one who is a good chance of earning his keep by improving the team enough to increase income from the fans.

I appreciate that your post is thoughtful and balanced, nonetheless it has an odour of sour grapes.

After he was demoted so Eddie's love child could take over

Sounded like a pretty sweet deal to me. Perhaps he should not have signed the contract?

It's a shame because Carlton and Collingwood are usually on such good terms. Eddie invites Stick round for dinner and a chat every other week and Judd plays cards with Maxwell.

This is THE rivalry in football, diplomacy is out of the question

Let's more accurately describe what happened rather on relying on Eddies version of events. He walked out because he was demoted and given a bogus role that had no responsibility or job description eventhough he was more qualified than his replacement. A bit like the old HR tactic of putting office workers in a room by themselves until they resign so you don't have to pay them redundancy. Doesn't work anymore as people can entertain themselves all day on the internet.

With all due respect I think you have it the wrong way round. He was offered the contract in 2009 which he agreed to. He was not tapped on the shoulder in 2011 and "demoted". Do you believe his recollection that he was "under duress"? This is classic Malthouse spin doctoring.

So let me get this straight, our new coach who you think is good wants revenge against our arch emeny??

What have we done!!

So he could have refused to sign the McGuire succession plan and been let go or sign and coach for 2 years knowing that he would not fulfill the requirement to fetch cups of coffee at Westpac Centre for the following 3 years.

Does anyone think MM ever intended to be 2nd banana at Collingwood. Their is no way his ego would allow it.

I didn't say it cannot work.

So 2 years later and after exceptional performances Mick isn't allowed to be disappointed that despite his efforts the club still wants him to give up his job and accept a second tier position so that all the credit from his hard work will now flow onto his predecessor who will still be relying (probably heavily) on Mick's advice?

I think it's pretty easy to understand why he walked

I agree with you. So why did he sign it?

I don't have a problem with him walking away. I was making the point that he was not sacked. Mick got 12 years at the Pies. Not too many coaches get that much support.

In fairness he made 4 Grand Finals and got a premiership. Team only bottomed out once and you did pretty well in finals.

He might of earned it
