In my opinion one of the best football brains in the business is Mick McGuane - a successful local coach as well.

Any of the AFL clubs could do a lot worse than employ him as a part time strategy/development coach.

Why is that?

Other people may have varied views on why he is/ isn't a fit for us, but, IMO, we've just started cleaning out our boys club FD so I'm not keen to add another former player into the mix that's publicly backed Buckley.

I think he deserves a crack if he wants it because the OP is correct he does have a fantastic footy brain. I just think it would be for the best if one of the other 17 clubs decided to bring him in.

Very impressive on SEN and clearly had Garry and Tim completely invested in him.

No question there is a role for a bloke like him. His coaching record has been impressive and he would transition pretty well. I think he would be terrific in development / VFL level and then bring him up maybe.

There is absolutely no doubting Micks football brain. As a player I don't remember him ever being caught with the ball, despite being quite slow by foot he could just see what was around him.

He coached my 2 brother inlaws and my father in law was team manager when he was coach at Gisborne. My father inlaw said his ability to see the game was 2nd to none. A bloke would have it in the back pocket and he would be able to tell you who was going to end up with it in the forward line. He was very tough as well. If they had a bad game they would end up having 7 am sessions on a Sunday morning. But he did coach them to 4 grannys in a row including 2 flags and has a very good record wherever he has gone.

Reality he also comes with quite a bit of baggage. The image of the game to the AFL and clubs is so important and having coaches who have his habits may come back to bit them in the ar$e.

Impressive football brain.

No doubt he can offer that.

But. Isn't he a mega chatter box? So does he continually talk and talk and talk?

If that's not right, then sure he'd offer something. But I'd still look at Hodge just for his recent intel etc.

Did like McGuane this morning, very good.

If he's off the punt and booze he'd be good.

I would say he will never go off the booze, read his description on twitter: "Nothing better than a good cold beer with your mates."

I have spoken with him at football functions in the past and believes he always should have been back at the club in some capacity. I think he's moved on from this opinion and seems content with his life, he's got a young boy to raise so there's hope he could produce a father-son pick for Collingwood... I'm sure he will be trying anyway.

Would have loved to see him given the VFL role instead of Rivers but that ship may have sailed now. Not sure what his relationship is like with Bucks either.

He has been away from Collingwood for over 20 years and he has a lot of runs on the board to be considered on his own merit.

He was overlooked for several assistant coaching roles because of his drinking and gambling issues. which were well-known to everyone. Grant Thomas took him on at St Kilda as opposition scouting coach but it lasted only one year as Mick decided to leave when Thomas was shafted. Having said that is it any worse than sleeping with your best friends wife, or going for a joy ride (with a guy who became a convicted killer), or in Nick Stevens' case severely bashing his girlfriend and threatening to kill her?. Despite this Carey went to SA, Didak continued on his merry way and clubs tried to appoint Stevens as coach whilst he had appealed his jail sentence.

David Parkin has stated repeatedly that McGuane has the greatest brain in football that he has come across in his 50+ years in football. He coached Burnie to a premiership in his second year. He coached Gisborne to premierships in 2002-3 as well as coaching the U18's to a premiership in the same year and he he has coached Keilor to two premierships.

Degenerate gambler and drinker?

Not sure if true but heard many rumours...particularly the gambling bit.

If he still a liability away from footy? Professionalism is pretty important these days, you don't want bogans who can't manage their personal life around your footy club.

Ironic we can find coaching roles for ex-players Rocca & Lockyer but not for Mick McGuane who would have both of them comfortably covered for footy knowledge.
Certainly has knowledge.
But it's all the baggage that might be a stumbling block. It's a pity I guess.

From his St Kilda days which is years back, don't think another Club has touched him?
So really that's what might raise a flag.

But can't deny his insight.

I'd be happy to have him coach our VFL side. As a player with Buckley as coach it would be problematic. As a coach I don't think the character differences are such an issue. It's a different dynamic. He's been supportive of Buckley as well.

One simply doesn't get to return after leaving for Carlton, that's a one way door.
In that light blue jumper too.
His last game.

Hard to forget that, once seen
