Analysis Midfield - 25 year draft recap

Jack Steven would be our best drafted mid since 2009

Since 2001 BJ easily

They're probably 1 & 2... day light to Jones.... day light to anyone else. Probably armitage.

Rest is unproven.

Its so bad.

Don't worry. Raph Clarke, Leigh Fisher, Gilbert, Brad Howard, Nicholas Winmar, Cripps, Newnes, Wright, Murdoch, Saunders, Billings, Acres, Templeton, McKenzie, Lonie, Gresham, Coffield, Byrnes, Nas, Owens, Wilson and Travaglia will all transition to inside mid soon enough.

Jack Steven
Armitage
Seb Ross
Dunstan

Quality!

It doesnt make for a good reading, its almost like the club has never rated midfielders at the draft and always looked for the hybrid types. Its embarrassing really for some reason the club has always found a reason to draft anything but quality midfielders.

I think for a period of time we tried but we did it the wrong way. We would always look for discards from other clubs who we were interested in at draft time but didn't pick up.

Nathan Freeman was a perfect example of this.

I think we’ve done an exceptional job if you think about it. It’s not easy to have the worst midfield in the comp every year for over a decade, that takes extraordinary effort.

Do we count Geary? He has a failed mid turned defender.

Not just mids. That period of drafting after 2012 until 2021 was the worst use of the national draft of any club ever. After about 2002 we started to lose momentum but had a few good ones amongst them. Post 2012 it was comically bad.

so incredibly grim, i feel like we've turned a corner but it's us so probs not
I think we have, but we're still paying for the horrific list management of the 2010s and will be for some time. That lack of players between 26-29 is going to come back to bite big time soon. Frustrating as the kids look good and Ross is the right coach in my opinion.

We are always turning the ****ing corner. Stuck in a round about.

I think that Ross has created a pro footy department for the first time perhaps for ever. It doesn't guarantee anything but it lets you get a run in the race. We had no-one running the show and no staff to oversee all the development and planning.

I like Garcia. Dunstan would have had 10 better games than Garcia's best game, and Pou's game against Sydney last year is better than every Garcia game.

Newnes 5, then probably Clark (seriously, look at who he is beating), then Acres, Dunstan and McKenzie. Windy/Pou 10.

If we're only including players who have predominantly played as onballers, then you have this list:

1 Jack Steven
2 Seb Ross
3 David Armitage
4 Marcus Windhager*
5 Hugo Garcia
6 Luke Dunstan
7 Hunter Clark*

*Arguable whether they are more onballers vs half back/wing

Amazing haul from 25 years of recruiting mids

Dunstan played 116 games for the club and averaged 20 disposals and 4 clearances per game over the entire time.

Garcia is averaging 16 and 3 this year.

I believe Garcia will end up better, but right now, it's Dunstan. Then Clark. Then Windy, THEN Garcia.
