Last year there was a lot of talk about our midfielders being small and slow, and unable to kick the ball long distances. The names on the list included Bell, Haselby, J Carr and Cook, all pretty hard-at-it in-and-under go-get-the-ballers (sorry to use technical terms).

All of those players are well regarded, with Cook consistantly having question marks over his disposal.

With the exception of Schammer, I don't really see young players on our list who are of a similar ilk and quality. The mids seem to be taller and faster, and perhaps less in and under. Haines and Browne perhaps, but it seems a bit hard to get a guage on where they are at just now.

Am I not seeing things correctly? Who else is out there ready to replace someone in 1-3 years time? Will our midfiled be fundemntally different in a few years time?

Bell, Haselby, J Carr, Schammer Peake and Cook are your main midfield group. Average hieght 177cm too small.

Sure will, but do you see him as an in and under in the same vein as Bell, Carr, Haselby and Cook?

Right now we wouldnt have any in and under players to replace Bell,Carr, Haselby and Cook. Carr, Haselby are still relatively young so we still have plenty of time to draft or trade for in and under players.

Dodd, Crowley, Mundy, Peake, Medhurst, Hayden, Schammer, Browne all will get some time this year playing across the center. (imo) Some of these will become in and under.

Haze, Black and both carrs should still be around in 3 years.

Who knows what our rookies will become.

Going on last year's stats Schammer, Black, Browne, J. Carr and Medhurst are under 180cm. In 3 years Black and Carr will be fighting for their spots Medhurst will be in the F.Line.

Our football club has put together a good bunch of players. We look like being a tall and pacey team.

But lets not get too far ahead. bring on '06 first.

Stribling is the one in line to take this role on in the future. Just remains to be seen whether he can develop accordingly.

There is a hard-at-it, twice All-Australian at U18 level player buried somewhere in our list. He hasn't played much but is contracted for at least another two years. If we could get 10-12 games into him at WAFL level we might find we have a dead-set star on our hands. But he has Dunne nothing to this point.

I think Dodd and Crowley can hold their own in terms of winning the ball. Both are fierce competitors. And then we have a bunch of injury prone players who could really surprise, and have shown flashes of good form in Browne, Haines, and Webster.

All footballers are in and under types at some point. JLo is second in clearances. Is he in and under?

You don't think the term has any meaning? For me, the beauty of watching Haselby is seeing him around and under the bottom of packs, getting the ball, then using his handskills to perfection. Invariably it has gone to a player whose role is not to be in the same place, unless circumstances dictate it.

I don't think we need to talk about long term replacements for J.Carr or Hasleby anytime soon.

Replacements:

Bell -> Schammer
Both small endurance based, hard-running tough nuts, Schammer will benefit the most when Bell retires. The only danger is the amount of injuries Schammer succumbs to.

Other backup options are Browne, who is also similar style and build (faster though than Bell) but less skillful, and Stribling, who is a long way behind both.

Cook -> Dunn
The retirement of Cook will most likely see the rise of Dunn who is a faster, taller and more skillful player in a similar mode but more of a flanker than on-baller (His endurance isn't good) which will suit CC who likes to play Cookie more in this manner anyway. Dodd, Crowley and Webster are all options as well, though they are less "qualified" for the job.

I think in-an-unders are covered well for now - IMO its more about getting players that can offer us more than what we have right now (Like taller and/or faster centre-players and wingers or just classy alround players). That is why (as Inferno66 mentioned) Peake looks to be a guy who will fit neatly into our side.

At no time should the combination of bell, haze & J Carr be in the midfield together. Maybe two of the three.Sides are going for speed in the midfield.

Medders, DJ, One Melee and Crowley will rotate thru and have height. Bomber will be on one wing and Blacky on the other. Huge opportunity for Schammer and Browne to shine both fast- especially browne.

Haines gould be a dark horse if his body can stay together.

Rash Thornton , Grover, Barru and roger will get a licence to run the ball out of defence.

Cookie is the impact player for the start of each quarter. Needs to use his hands to set the speedsters on their way.

I reckon Scotty too Hotty would go well in the midfield.

The development of the "oversize" midfileder is interesting. The Pav of course has been there, Brown for Brissy, Mooney for the Catters. I guess that is where Scotty would kind of fit, minus the body weight.

He could definitely slip through some gaps the others wouldn't. But would her be able to clear a path? I'd love to see him try. A massive bump from Scot-wah too Hot-wah taking out some pest tagging Haze.

The image just has a little bit of a problem coming clearly into focus for some reason.
