Because it's Geelong.

Or maybe because Smith was coming off both an ACL and a poor season before that, there were question marks about his off field behaviour / issues, and the Bulldogs seemingly made very little effort to keep him (offering him a two year deal compared to six from Geelong)...

No, it was because it was Geelong. Every neutral fan knew it was a rip off and the Dogs did too.

Leverage allowed the Cats to pull off another steal, but everyone knew Smith was worth more.

You're rewriting history just because Smith's impact for us has been beyond anybody's expectations.

Here's a small selection of posts from the first few pages of the Smith trade thread last year. None of these were made by Geelong supporters.

Bailey Smith for Geelongs 1st rounder.

Easiest deal in recent history.

Massive buyer beware here. Genuinely could be a superstar or flop depending on the off field and injuries.

Legit the most over rated player in the league. An outside pacey player with shit disposal and decision making skills.

Hawthorn surely split pick 3-4 (assuming that's where they finish) and trade one of the later first rounders for Baz

I have zero problems with the Dogs letting him go for draft capital. The one plus that Smith had going for him was his speed, big gamble now his done his ACL.

There is about zero chance of Dogs getting a top 5 pick for him if he leaves. Hasnt been good enough, off field issues and now coming off an ACL.

You brought evidence. It’s exactly this.

First it was “he isn’t worth it”

Then it was “he can’t play inside mid, that’s why he was an outside mid at the Dogs”

Then it became “He won’t last more than a couple weeks before he pisses off his teammates and coaches”

Then it was “Ok he’s playing well but his disposal is shit”

Now it’s “ok he’s leading Coaches votes and Brownlow betting, but teammate x,y,z is better”

The cope has been insane lol but back on track for Miles Bergman

Reckon Saints, Doggies and North would be good landing spots.

Question for peeps here, what would a realistic trade for Bergman?
I can’t really place his value. He puts up similar numbers to Zach Guthrie for us Catters and we view Zuthrie as one of the most underrated players in the League who does soo much unheralded stuff but is constantly awesome every week.

Feel Bergman is in that range too, super important to Port but doesn’t get the credit outside of the club he probably should.

It's mostly "he ****ed off to go on a tanning holiday midyear, made his trade request public half an hour before the B&F, gave the club the finger on the way out, and has shown none of the grace and decency that most traded players have towards the club that drafted, developed, and supported them". Good player. Proven himself a shit bloke.

Well. considering that a) Bergman is 3 years younger than Guthrie and b) Bergman is posting similar stats to Guthrie + actually winning clearances and generating inside 50s as well as maintaining the same amount of marks and intercepts as old mate Zach, why don't you come up with a realistic trade for Guthrie based on his value to Geelong and then add 50% since Guthrie has reached his ceiling at 27 whereas Bergman is only 24 and is just starting to test the limits of what he's capable of?

So you can't come up with a realistic trade then.

No one is giving pick 5 for Guthrie just like no one is giving pick 5 for Bergman. Guthrie is around pick 20 and Bergman is pick 10.

I'd think if it were the Blues involved that Port would be far more interested in our 2026 first. This draft is ordinary at best. Next years looks like one of the more stacked in recent times.

Also get to gamble that we'll fall further down the ladder again next year.

Problem is Port seem pretty confident Cochrane will get accepted into the Indigenous NGA and be eligble to go to Port.

He is likely a top 2 pick at this stage and arguably the best player in the draft class. If anything, we would more so be looking to get out of the top 10 next year and rather have picks in this 2025 Draft Class (albeit being a fairly weak draft).

Yeah, depends a lot on the Dougie stuff. If Port get rejected (entirely possible imo purely due to how much pressure is on the AFL atm re NGA's etc) then I'd imagine they'll be loading up every pick they can to get in range of acquiring him. He's a seriously special talent.

Don't give up too much. Well get him after a year or 2 anyway

The AFL need to change the NGA to Metro rule for SA clubs???

Pick 20 + 50% = Pick 10. So you just literally agreed with what I said.

You were talking about their value right now. Bergman at Guthrie's age will be worth pick 5 (provided he continue his development trend).
