Here is a letter from Greg Miller posted on Rhett Bartlett's site "Rhettrospective".
Greg Miller outlines his reasoning for running on the Casey ticket and responds to criticism. At the end of his email is the PDF of the message he has sent to members:
Hi Rhett,
I am pleased to respond to your email outlining more of my thoughts and perhaps a better insight in why I made the decision I have.
I have attached a copy of a message being delivered to members. It pretty much says how I feel.
Since I decided to run, there has been a lot said. The journalists who don’t understand my motives have not lived amongst the members for the past two years. Yet I have. I feel responsible for their enjoyment and pride in their club and I’m passionate about helping drive the changes to the football department that will deliver them what they desperately desire- on field success.
I don’t know most of the rebel group, however I was most unhappy with the finger pointing, and their sometimes nasty and often aggressive style.
The singling out of Clinton Casey is unfair. He has admitted to mistakes whilst others who sat and made decisions on the same board for over 5 years seem to simply wash their hands of any blame. He was in charge of a Board that included Peter Welsh and Brendan Schwab that was not united. His new members, John Matthies, Anthony Mithen, Rob Dalton, and now Maurice O’Shannassy and I are as one in our belief that we are heading in the right the direction. It is a direction in time that will return this club in it’s rightful place as a football superpower. The Chief Executive Officer, Steven Wright, has the staff going in the same direction, and Terry Wallace has exceeded my expectations from the day he commenced.
No matter what is slung at Clinton, he is a generous man, a democratic leader and has AFL support (which you should not underestimate). I believe the lessons learnt stand him in a good position to continue to implement the positive changes and positive momentum you have witnessed since mid 2004.
Peter Welsh and I worked well with for the first 15 months before he left. Brendan made a mistake when he questioned my integrity. It was reported to me that he told others I was in Clinton’s pocket. Brian Wood has been thrust into the spokesman role and that is unfair on him .To understand the workings of a football club, indeed football department, would take him time.
Charles Macek, I have not as yet met, but if I may correct him on one key comment, he said I “put Clinton ahead of Richmond”. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’m sure there are some very good Richmond people amongst the alternative, but any new Board, any new President, and certainly Brendan Schwab will want to do things differently. We can’t afford to go back to our old ways.
I am extremely confident the current Board (particularly with the strengthened positive changes in the skills sets of the personnel), will successfully implement the Crowe Lovett business plan and return us to profitability; continue with the uphill resurgence with sponsorship, coteries, and membership; and support the football department as it should be – prudently but with respect for those it has entrusted to do the job – Wallace and myself.
As I have said, I am convinced we are on the right track. We are 2 years into what I’ve always said will take 3 – 4 years. The Richmond faithful must have patience. This time next year if the Club is not on a steep uphill climb, has not continued the positive momentum - then yes replace the Board and replace me.
But now is not the right time.
I make this judgement with 34 years of football experience behind me. Crucially it is this experience that has taught me when changes to a club can bring success – and when change can bring failure.
It is this experience that told me I had to take a stance and that I should join with Clinton Casey & his Positive Momentum Ticket.
I trust that this letter provides a better insight for my decision.
Can you also please pass on to your readers that no matter how they feel, it is important that all members vote, and that we have a true reflection of who they trust to direct their Club.
Greg Miller.
