It angers me that folks say "ah that's hindsight, anyone could have been a star from that year". Tell that to Trevor O'Hoy - until recently CEO of Foster's who was axed/ resigned after it became clear that, in hindsight, he overpaid for Southcorp.

The figures tell the story - ordinary.... Some decent gets, though I'd caution against regarding latter drafts as successes as yet - I recall thinking Alex Gilmour would be a gun).... Ordinary bloke, ordinary performance, cheerio...

Miller has been here since 2003. Now let's see how he's gone shall we, as director of football and for the majority of the time since the chief recruiting "guru":

2003:

National Draft:

Alex Gilmour
Tom Roach
Daniel Jackson
Shane Morrison
Shane Tuck
Andrew Raines
Simon Fletcher
Kyle Archibald

Tuck a good get, others borderline VFL or no longer with us

PSD:

Ben Marsh
Luke Weller

Other players taken in the PSD include Michael Johnson (Freo) and Surjan (Port)

Trades:

N Brown for picks 6 and 20

2004:

National Draft

Deledio
Tambling
Meyer
Pattison
Polo
McGuane
Limbach
Mark Graham

After Meyer was picked the following decent players were drafted:

Bate
Wood
Monfries
Dunn
Murphy
Van Berlo
Rosa
J Moore (Swans)
Prismall

LeCras
Sherman
Taylor (Hawks)
Tiller (Bulldogs)
Moran (formerly North now Crows)
Matthew Egan (AA CHB 2007)

PSD:

T Knobel

Not much there, with Eddie Betts the only player drafted in the PSD still playing.

Trades:

Brad Ottens traded for picks 12 (Meyer) and 16 (Pattison)

Troy Simmonds effectively for Aaron Fiora

2005:

National Draft

JON
Hughes
Casserley

None of which can get a game in our senior side.

After Casserley, the following decent players were taken:

Gamble
Warnock
Patfull
Bartram
Stokes
Swallow

Trades:

Pick 56 for Pat Bowden (now departed). Pick 56 used by Brisbane on Joel Patfull, now a permanent (and young) CHB.

PSD:

White

OK, but we didn't pick Porplyzia

Rookie:

Graham
Humm (hello????)
Howat

2006:

National Draft:

Jack Riewoldt
Shane Edwards
Connors
Peterson
Collins

Edwards taken by Roos after Collins, and Rodan let go and taken after Collins by Port

PSD:

Kent Kingsley

Trades:

Polak and pick 13 for pick 8

Rookie:

Tas Clingan
Jake King

2007:

National Draft

Cotchin
Rance
Putt

Early days, but hard to miss with selections given

Trades:

Jordan McMahon for pick 19 (Callan Ward)
Morton for pick 35

PSD:

Gourdis

Rookie:

Collard
Silvester
Cartledge
Howat

not the most compelling case you put forward, in ea instance where you point to other "decent" players taken thereafter, Buddy aside, there are not too many luminaries amongst them...and too balance the discussion he should be credited for finding a couple of diamonds in the rough with successful rookie selections.

although I dont believe that Miller has amounted to the messiah many hoped for, in the washup, it was poor management and under resourcing from the board that largely dictated our net result from recruiting, that's why Francis Jackson and Craig Cameron have both come on board in last 12-24 months

Are you trying to tell me you wouldn't rather any one of the above ahead of Casserly or JON?

Get serious

right now, would make %^$# all difference, we have many young players that I would argue have more upside than that mangy lot..stokes aside who's proven to be a good little player

Just to prove a point about the 2004 draft so the most known final results to compare aganst players UTG has said class as decent.

Adelaide chose John Meeson.
Collingwood Chose Chris Egan
Port chose Adam Thomson
Saints chose Andrew McQualter
Port chose Ryan Willits
Hawks chose Thomas Murphy
Bulldogs chose Jesse Wells
Lions chose Pat Garner
Chad Gibson

After Meyer/Meeson/Egan/Thomson was picked the following decent players were drafted:

Bate
Wood
Monfries
Dunn

(After Andrew McQualter/Ryan Willits/Thomas Murphy/Jesse Wells were picked the following decent players were also drafted.)

Murphy
Van Berlo

(After Pat Garner/Chad Gibson were picked the following decent players were also drafted.)

Rosa
J Moore (Swans)
Prismall

LeCras
Sherman
Taylor (Hawks)
Tiller (Bulldogs)
Moran (formerly North now Crows)
Matthew Egan (AA CHB 2007)

Also lol at rating Moran, Murphy, Dunn and even Monfries to an extent as decent players.

And that's only from 1 draft so as I said by going through all those drafts as you have I could come up with a post like yours for every team.

Get it?

miller was in charge at the end of 2002.in time for the nd he was responsible for the kane johnson trade. swapped torney and down traded 3 picks typical miller.
you can add schulz fleming nichols sipthorp and blumfield to his list of duds

Phoenix your point that you can't get drafting right all the time and every team has hits and misses is fine.

However if you want to critique the 2004 draft it is much more useful to do it from the perspective of how did it perform to fix our structural issues.

Only 1 KPP in the top 20 (not even genuine KPP), not 1 ruck, Pattison with obvious
kicking problems, McGuane with kicking problems. Not picking Wood ahead of Meyer and Pattison just doesn't make sense. You can do this with the 2005 draft as well.

I think the club really didn't think too far ahead concerning Roughead. They thought he would be a tiger, and therefore when we didn't pick him, we didn't have any other contingency plans.

Can someone please tell me who draft pick 6 and 20 were when we traded them for nathan brown ?
totally irrelevant. there was 70 odd kids to choose from pick 6 and 50 odd from pick 20 we could have picked anyone of them we had the option.

pattison was taken as a chf. he is not a ruckman as has been shown in his time at the club. come to think of it hes not a chf either way to many chronic deficiencies in his game. but like most things richmond we will hang onto him for 7 or 8 yrs in hope he improves.

You aren't contradicting me.

Which two would you have picked? Fact is, we kept drafting after most teams had stopped and got Tuck (#73) and Raines (#76), probably two of the better performed players from that draft class (yes, 2003 was that bad).

Brown for two picks in that draft was a good move.

Come on ranger, Brown will have retired and not played 1 finals match for Richmond. Great trade indeed:rolleyes:
