hello all, just wondering what the potential outcomes will be now that the mining boom is supposedly over? What fields will be heavily effected? Is it worth studying/upgrading skillsets that are generally associated with mining in Australia? I'm in my second year of a Geology major and have not heard much info on the prospects after 2015 onwards. Now I wasn't one of those that only done a geology major for the cash, I done it for my real interest in the subject. I was planning on working for a few years after my degree before possibly continuing onto further study in the field. Many thanks.

It's a cyclical thing, in a year or less it could be going gangbusters again, there's still some demands for skills out there.

It most likely takes off again after September. WA is still looking ok and there are many large projects about to take off in QLD, such as Adani, which will be the largest open cut coal mine in Australia, and close to the biggest in the world. As for the people who are constantly negative about mining, just remember what saved our backsides many times over the years.

Like I said, short term thinking -

Are they seriously about to start work on what will become the largest open cut coal mine in Australia and one of the biggest world wide? Coal? ****ing Coal?

What a joke -

Yes, you know the black stuff that you burn and turn into electricity? I have to admit I am not that keen on coal mining, however the reality is it is here to stay and is a major contributor to our economy. What do you think helped us pull through the gfc? Hint: It wasn't shrewd economic policy by the labor govt.

Spare me the patronising - I know that digging up minerals 'saved' Australia from feeling the effects of an unsustainable, perpetual growth economic system littered with speculation coming back and biting us on the ass like southern Europe; As far as I am concerned, all it has 'saved' us from is the reality that we are living way beyond our means and our affluence is a scurge.

You're not too keen on coal, but it's just one of those things we have to keep doing, you know, because that's how things are, right? Gotta keep burning that shit until we choke, right? Becuase that's just how things are... right?

Sorry, wrong board - Go enjoy your dirty jobs - Your planet will thank you later

I agree with you re the overspending, in reality we need to realise that we cannot have perpetual growth, and sooner or later we have to say enough is enough. Still, we want make faster computers, better tv's,nicer cars etc and world population is still growing unchecked. We can harp on about choking the planet, which i agree with you about, but when the major players in China, India and the USA don't share this philosophy we get nowhere. If we want to continue this way of life that we enjoy, there are prices to pay unfortunately.

Mining Australia - Metaphorically and physically raping the landbase

The epitome of short term thinking - Way to go industrialisation

did you type that whilst hitting a keyboard made from hydrocarbon, with an aluminium casing, in a room with titanium based coloured paint and cement flooring using coal or gas generated electricity.

feel free to live what you preach

Great choice

you should still be able to find work but make sure you do some finance course at uni and better still some business management units.

Geo's suck at geology as they don't understand they are fund managers.

Geo'ss are given $10m to find $30m of pay dirt. They are not given $10m to test a theory or find something interesting.

If you learn this basic principle you will be earning $400k a year within 5 years of graduating. You will also be able to start your own business a make $100m.

If you end up like 99% of geo's, who don't bother learning finance, you will earn $100-200k during the good times and drive a cab during the down times.

Oh and do some vacation work with a couple of junior resource company during your school holidays. Try and stick with uranium, copper and gold. It is a relationship industry and you will need some friends to get a start.

And what exactly are you doing for the environment?

Suggest you bin the computer, switch off the computer and relocate to the trees, you tree hugging hippy.

Hypocrites like you disgust me

Exactly what i was saying in one of my posts above. If we want to continue to enjoy this lifestyle we have, there is a price that needs to be paid. Sure, we can stop mining but that means throw away your mobile, your tv, grab a spear and head off into the bush.

Hi

I finished geology in 1985 and at that time in our third year we were told that there was basically no work around, about a third went on and did a fourth year in teaching, I got a job straight away and have worked ever since. It is a cyclical industry that many outside of it have know idea about. The media and our government as well have shown this through very short sited views, remember the industry was a problem when it was growing too fast and we had a two speed economy? that was months not years ago and I can tell you right now the industry is in a bad way, welcome all to a one speed economy.

If you enjoy geology then stick with it, there are not many jobs that can take you to almost anywhere in the world. I would also suggest, as one poster mentioned, that you do learn a bit about finance and understand the stock market. I will help you understand why the market is cyclical and that while the pay is good in the boom times the reality is these times are not the norm. Our current government is about to learn this lesson the hard way.

To the poster who is quite happy using resources but thinks the industry is all about the rape and pillage of the earth, just ignore their ignorance. I sleep well at night knowing I have make a positive influence on people lives by providing the resources they need for a better way of life.

I hope all goes well.

I'm well aware of the lack of agency that I have within this system which renders me little choice in genuine alternative options -

I'd love to relocate to the trees... but everytime I spend time out there I get moved or even arrested because of the logging coups that continue to intrude in the little remaining old growth we have --

I acknowledge the hypocrisy that my politics can not completely align with the way I live - But I can't do anything about it -

You guys can have a circle jerk though, and think to yourselves just because I happen to use the instruments of the resources extraction culture that I oppose makes my arguments completely invalid.

As usual, it is everyone else's fault

I would never be as so disingenuous as to ever say any one person could be at 'fault' for the current economic paradigm... I know that people who choose to work in the mines are only make rational economic decisions based on their life circumstance. I can't really fault anyone for that, but I can choose to disagree with the industry as a whole and how over exploitative it currently is.

The best way to effect change in the world is to make a positive contribution.

If you think there is a better way, then do it?

Whinging, bitching and blaming the world for all its problems doesn't help anyone.

You will be surprised how much you can achieve if you try!

Well, for sure.. I certainly am trying in my own little ways with the little agency I have -

I'm also 99% sure that my post all the way back in may that you quoted today would have been made in the middle of the night after many alcoholic beverages (i.e. easily aggrovated) -

EDIT: I just checked.. posted 2.55am - I would've most undoubtedly been drunk

Thank you for the great information. Much appreciated :)

I don't think that your arguements are invalid just impractical, as you have said you need to use these resources therefore they need to be extracted. I think you will find that the vast majority of people understand this and therefore try to do it in the least enviromentally damaging way. Mining companies can always improve they way that they deal with the enviroment, as we all can, you should try to understand the industry and the challenges it has and you will be surprised at how much the industry has changed over the years.

Peter Garrett aprroved the development of a uranium mine in South Australia, who would have thought that would happen in the 80's.

Peter Garrett is not a good example to cite. He is a puppet. He never wrote any Midnight Oil songs -

There is a difference between 'needing' to use mining resources and being 'compelled' to use them in order to function within the economic imperative that our society dictates....

Anyone know much about the Health & Safety area in mining or the offshore ?

Working in mining is no more morally dubious than working in an office. I think humans should consume a lot less so that we can live on Earth a bit longer, but we still need to produce stuff.....and stuff comes from out of the ground - it doesn't come from shops.

We all consume shitloads of earth resources in modern rich countries; maybe 5% of us work directly to produce these resources, but 100% of us consume them. We are all part of the modern consuming lifestyle, no one's job/lifestyle is "innocent."

I just think it makes more sense to picket malls than mines....reduce consumption of resources, and production will inevitably decline.

what would you like to know?

Just about the area in general, best courses to do, manning/recruiting agents to get in touch with anything that may assist in getting a start really. I have been told of late there has been a downturn. But they don't last forever and I want to be prepared for when things change. PM me if that's easier Power Raid, cheers
