Vikings RT Phil Loadholt was carted off with a lower leg injury in Saturday's preseason opener.

Loadholt went down on the second play of the game. The early reports are this is a serious injury. Fourth-round pick T.J. Clemmings should get the first chance at replacing Loadholt.

Probably the last area we wanted to get even thinner....good stuff :p

The injury is a torn achilles and will end Loadholt's season before it even started. Rookie T.J. Clemmings is the reserve right tackle at the moment, but I'd also put David Yankey into the mix with fan favourite Babatunde Aiyegbusi still a remote chance to make the roster.

If you're confused about my David Yankey statement I'll explain a bit more. Mike Harris was used at LT last year when Kalil went down and he was a disaster. This year he's been moved to RG and seems to be doing an excellent job there, but there's a chance they'll move Harris to RT and slot Yankey into RG. Clemmings would then become the RT/RG rotation guy to spell Harris and Yankey.

No that makes perfect sense to me

Monday brings confirmation of the worst case scenario for Phil Loadholt:

An MRI confirmed starting right tackle Phil Loadholt will need season-ending surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon.

T.J. Clemmings looks to have be in prime position to take Loadholt's position, and given Loadholt's contract situation (2016 is the final year of his contract), Loadholt might not be back. Given Loadholt will go to IR, the team doesn't have to make any decisions until the offseason.

Offensive coordinator Norv Turner gave rookie T.J. Clemmings a vote of confidence Monday, two days after veteran right tackle Phil Loadholt was lost for the season when he tore his Achilles' tendon during a preseason game. Clemmings, a fourth-round draft pick out of the University of Pittsburgh, would slide in at right tackle with last year's swing tackle, Mike Harris, currently at right guard.
Turner said that the Vikings will explore their options for patching the line, but added that "if T.J. plays like he did Saturday night and continues to play well out here, he should be a pretty competitive player in this league."

@RapSheet: The longest tenured #Vikings player will be looking for a new team. Minnesota is cutting LS Cullen Loeffler, as Kevin McDermott beat him out

I'll have to wait to tomorrow to confirm this one, but it's a sure sign that the Vikings value Loeffler highly by cutting him so early as it gives him the best chance to make another team.

EDIT: Yup - he's gone. The Vikes guaranteed $300k of his salary this season, so it doesn't save a lot against the salary cap this year, but will give the Vikings a bit more wriggle room next year. Kevin McDermott is on a two year Contract.

Running back Joe Banyard and ex Packers tight end Brandon Bostick were the highest profile cuts announced so far as the Vikings reduce their list in advance of September 1.
Cornerbacks Jalil Carter, Justin Coleman, and Demarcus Van Dyke, wide receivers DaVaris Daniels and Jordan Leslie, tackle Stephen Goodin, linebacker Josh Kaddu, defensive lineman Crishon Rose and Caesar Rayford were the other cuts.
The roster currently sits at 78, so there are 3 cuts yet to be announced

The Vikings only have one more roster move to make before Tuesday's deadline as they waive/injured offensive tackle Carter Bykowski and moved cornerback Josh Robinson to the reserve Physically Unable to Perform list.
Bykowski, 25, has been out with a torn pectoral muscle since the Aug. 15 preseason contest against Tampa Bay. If Bykowski goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll revert to injured reserve. Per NFL rule, players will less than four years in the league cannot be placed on injured reserve before the first cutdown date without being exposed to waivers.
Robinson, 24, started training camp on the active PUP list. The reserve PUP list now forces Robinson, who suffered a partially torn pectoral muscle in June's mandatory minicamp, to sit out the first six weeks of the regular season. Robinson is eligible to return to practices with the team at the start of Week 7. Now that he's been moved from the active PUP list to the reserve PUP list, he does not count against the team's roster limit.

I believe Robinson was always on the bubble of making the final roster as he's not a Zimmer favourite. His injury muddied the waters and made it hard for the team to cut him due to a lack of any tape to base the decision on. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up on the season ending IR list at some stage.

Bykowski will end up on the IR list after he clears waivers and will have a chance to compete for a roster spot in 12 months time.

Final 53 Man Roster and Practice Squad

Offense

Quarterbacks (3)
QB Teddy Bridgewater, Shaun Hill, Taylor Heinicke

Heinicke is a surprise addition to the squad, having performed well enough during the pre-season to make the final roster

Running backs (4)
RB Adrian Peterson, Jerick McKinnon, Matt Asiata
FB Zach Line

No surprises amongst the RB/FB group

Receivers (6)
WR Mike Wallace, Charles Johnson, Jarius Wright, Adam Thielen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Stefon Diggs

Similarly, the WR group has no surprises with Thielen holding onto his spot and Diggs adding a 6th name to the list

Tight ends (4)
TE Kyle Rudolph, Rhett Ellison, MyCole Pruitt, Chase Ford

I wasn't expecting the Vikings to keep 4 TEs, but they did.

Offensive line (9)
T Matt Kalil, T.J. Clemmings, Austin Shepherd, Jeremiah Sirles
G Brandon Fusco, Mike Harris
C John Sullivan, Zac Kerin
C/G Joe Berger

The biggest question mark for the Vikings going into the regular season is the OL. Jeremiah Sirles was acquired via a trade from the Chargers and I wouldn't be surprised if the Vikings add new names as the season progresses.

Defense

Defensive line (9)
DE Everson Griffen, Brian Robison, Justin Trattou, Danielle Hunter, Scott Crichton
DT Linval Joseph, Sharrif Floyd, Tom Johnson' Shamar Stephen

No surprises amongst the DL group, which looks solid

Linebackers (6)
OLB Anthony Barr, Chad Greenway, Edmond Robinson
LB Eric Kendricks, Audie Cole, Gerald Hodges

Michael Mauti didn't make the final list (and he was picked up by the Saints). The Linebackers group looks solid as well

Defensive backs (9)
CB Xavier Rhodes, Terence Newman, Trae Waynes, Captain Munnerlyn, Marcus Sherels
S Harrison Smith, Robert Blanton, Andrew Sendejo, Antone Exum
Suspended: CB Jabari Price (two games)
PUP (to return week 6): CB Josh Robinson

Marcus Sherels keeps his spot (and as a result will also be the punt returner). It'll be interesting to see who on the team loses their spot when jabari Price returns. I'm not convinced that Josh Robinson will return to the team after his IR term is up.

Specialists (3)
LS Kevin McDermott
K Blair Walsh
P Jeff Locke

Kevin McDermott made the team after the roster cut downs to 75 removed Cullen Loeffler. Walsh has been pretty ordinary during the pre-season, but holds his spot for the time being.

Practice Squad (10):
DL Zach Moore, DE B.J. Dubose , OL Isame Faciane, OG David Yankey, WR Isaac Fruechte, SS Anthony Harris, ILB Brian Peters, LB/FB Blake Renaud, OLB Brandon Watts, RB Dominique Williams

Zach Moore was previously with the Patriots, Isame Faciane was previously a DL and has moved to OL this season. Yankey and Watts were surprising cuts for the main roster, but get gigs on the practice squad.

Cheers for the update, Sven

"Audie Cole didn't make the final list (and he was picked up by the Saints)." - This has to be wrong, I'm reading wrong or you have killer sources(not on google)...either way, WTF?!?!

my bad, wrong ILB - Michael Mauti was picked up by the saints

Great write up Sven - still think we're a tad light at LB/OL but genuinely feel this is the best list we've had since 09' - SKOL VIKINGS.

I think it's the best LB group we've had in years. There's talk that four linebackers will rotate through the base and nickel alignments with Anthony Barr/Gerald Hodges/Chad Greenway in the base set, and Anthony Barr/Eric Kendricks in the nickel. Audi Cole is a more than capable backup and the fact that the Vikings were willing to take 7th round rookie Edmond Robinson over Michael Mauti is telling IMO.

I think Chad Greenway will benefit from a reduced number of snaps and Gerald Hodges is a definite upgrade over Jasper Brinkley in both run and pass defence. Kendricks is the wild card, but everything I've heard tells me he will be a vital cog in the linebacker group as the season progresses.

1st Qtr so far: Poor start against the run, great ST FG block and turnover, 3 & out from Teddy's first drive..throw away, broken up and either thrown away or miscommunication, better against the run in 2nd drive but still some pretty big gaps. APs 1st touch 4yrds, he's officially back L&G. Almost 4&out but Hayne drops punt, recovered by Vikes, in SFs half.

AP (with a little help) drags 3 players 8 yards after contact to get 1st down :)

0-10 down at end of 3rd. Been pretty lackluster but currently a strong drive and are inside redzone. Right in it if we can convert.
