I apolagise if this has been done before but i've been extreamly surprised by skipper's influence at hawthorn. On this years form i think he's been a fair bit better then big will.So why did he not get any chances over the last couple of seasons, had he lost interest or just ran out of chances ?
He's goal on the weekend was one that very few ruckman could kick weather it be fluke or not, so i'm just wondering where it went wrong. Is it the fact that he has a much classier midfield under him now then wen he had his oppurtunities with the dogs ( i'm talking 04-07 when he played the bulk of he's games in a much less successful bulldogs side).

He was always handy. Had a good leap. Decent disposal. Never really got that much of an extended run at it I guess. He was in and out a bit. And Eade tends to get favourites.

Having said that - I also think our midfield needed/needs a ruckman who'll throw his weight around a bit - which Will & Huddo do, but Skipper never did.

I always liked him though. Very glad he got another shot with Hawthorn, and that he's making the most of it.

I said this last year, that Skip never got an opportunity to play as ruckman with us, he would come in and play half forward and pinch hit in the ruck. I'm not sure he's a better ruck than Minson, but he is a better ground level player and has better skills.

Hawks only played him in the ruck because they had no one left, but now he's got his chance playing as a ruck, he's doing what I thought he would, no surprise from me, I saw a lot of him at Willi last year and he was really good as the first ruck.

Roughead will be much better than both of them

This. And that's why he is gone. As for his ruckwork, when he did get an opportunity he wasn't very effective. Also, he hasn't got the size to go with a Sandilands or Mumford or Jolly. (He is only 193cm)

It is great to see him play well for Hawthorn however, sometimes all a player needs is a change of scenery. Just look at Farren Ray.

Here we go... I was waiting for this thread. Skipper strings a few decent games together, kicks a great goal from the boundary (against no opposition). Sound familiar? (Remember his freak banana goal for us?)
He is just a good ordinary player that is taking he opportunity until the real ruckman come back, but to say he is a lose to our club is a joke.
Five words.......Roughhead, Cordy, Minson, Hudson, Prato......anymore?

yeah....he wouldn't be getting a game with us of course....Roughead and Cordy need to be able to develop at Willi and be be the first in when Hudson and Big will are out....It was bets for him to leave, I hope he does well as I thought he a was a great fellow and hard worker for us.

But the thread is about him compared to Minson.....and no....he's not a better ruckman.

Very Happy for him, he deserved the opportunites that we could not afford to him. I hope for his sake (not Hawthorns) that he can cement a regular place in the team. Lets wait and see how much Hawthorn value him in the coming weeks as they start to get back some injured talls

Handy fringe player who we picked up as an under age prospect (a bit like Jones - sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't). The truth is at the age of 27 coming into this season he was never going to be a star or a late bloomer like Pods, even if he was able to be a useful performer when required (like now, at Hawthorn).

As pointed out by TK we have newer, better models coming off the production line in Cordy and Roughead, and also Everitt can pinch hit if we get desperate. So the rucking opportunities at Willi would be limited and if either of our first choice rucks went down it was clearly going to be Roughead who'd get the call.

All that means he was just going to be a list-clogger with us. Best for both Skipper and the Dogs if we let him go.

I don't know if he was a nice bloke or not, but it's immaterial. He seemed like a diligent, hard-working and loyal player to me. I wish him well.

Minson's 60m bomb on his non preferred earlier this year was better.

One good game and it seems like why did we let him go ?? Come on now - he did kick 5 in a game for us too . Had plenty of chances over what 7 or 8 years.
Good luck to him - but really

I am happy for Skip to get another chance at Hawthorn, but expect him to be demoted when Taylor and co come back for the Hawks.

SKip is small for a ruckman, and was a pinch hitter up forward, but was inconsistent. We have one of the best rucking duos coming through in Cordy/Roughead.
