Looking at our lineups lately, I think we are missing just 1 crucial element - a power forward. Add 1 and we go from a good team to a genuine flag contender.

I know we have Cloke and he does a great job as a leading forward, but we are missing a guy who can take a big pack mark in our forward 50.

Currently our forward line is very small with Davis, Medhurst, Didak and Thomas. These guys are being relied on to kick the majority of our score without having someone there who could kick 5-6 week in week out, eg: Brown, Franklin, Fevola.

If we have that big forward it will allow the smaller guys to be freed up and will straighten our whole game-plan, making us more direct and more inside 50's - which would result in more scoring shots.

We need to find a player like this in the next 2-3 years to make use of the great list we have now.

Any thoughts?

I disagree with this, Cloke is the power forward that we need. Look at the top two sides, Geelong and Bulldogs - they hardly have big pack marking forwards and things seem to be going well for them. Cloke's in the top 5 for contested marks in the league so he's obviously going ok. I love how we're now playing Medhurst out of the square, he's creative enough to push up if needed but strong enough overhead to take a grab one on one.
Overall I think our forward line is our biggest strength, with Thomas, Didak, Medhurst, Davis rotating through we're extremely hard to match up on. Add players like Pendles, Swan, Johno (gasp), who can drift forward and kick goals also, nothing too much of concern I think.

Yes we need a foil for travis,at the moment Anthony is not doing abad job.He is not overly tall, but can kick, mark and has got genuine good aggression.
If we play our cards right and can consolidate 4th position, for finals we may have Rocca,Reid back with a fit josh hopefully.
I reckon our Trump card will be revealed next year. His name is Chris dawes and he will become the power forward we need to compliment Cloke.
With Rocca playing on hopefully for another year, and rusling to come back nect year we can look forwrad to the following mix and match forwrd structure.

Rocca,Cloke,Dawes interchange-Brown and Anthony (back and forward)
Rusling,Reid,Medhurst
Didak,Davis,Thomas........Who's gonna stop that and the best part of this lot is that we can mix and match to suit each week.Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk.

Hummm........ Cloke, Rocca, Dawes, Reid, Rusling, Anthony, Brown at times too. Seems that tall forwards are pretty well covered for the next 2 - 3 years. I think a mobile key forward is more damaging in todays game anyway.

Would take the likes of Reiwoldt, Franklin, Fevola, Pavlich. Over players like Brown, Bradshaw, Hall, Roughead.

I think we have our big mark taker in cloke. Would be best hands in the afl. What we need is the more mobile tall forward such as a reid or rus in the role which ja is playing now

I say we go the Bulldogs method and keep our forward line small with only Trav as the main tall.

If we go after one player at the end of the year, it has to be a midfielder, Daniel Kerr anyone, who i have been saying for month's wants to play in Melbourne.

He would be hard to land with clubs like Essendon and Carlton willing to throw stupid amounts of money at him, but he might just want to play in a successful team again, unlike Judd who only wanted money.

Everyone knows our midfield is our biggest problem.

It's not like we planned to have a short forward line?
We lost Rusling very early on.
Fraser went down
and then Rocca went.
We had a back up in Reid and he went down too.

Trav is really a case of the last tall man standing

No we aint. Have you kept a close watch on Woodie for the last 4 weeks? He's a terrific pack mark. Shabby kick, but he's starting to straighten. I reckon he'll play a bigger part in September than a lot of people would give him credit for.

And Bryno is providing the Lonie-like penetration inside 50 but with the bullock-like power missing from the former. If he's not booting them he seems to be floating around half-forward ready to take a strong grab.

If JA also happens to be forward to kick to, then we're doing alright size-wise I reckon.

We need an elite midfielder. Look at the top 3 sides, Geelong have Ablett and Bartel, Hawthorn have Hodge and Dogs have Cooney. All these players are both inside and outside midfielders and we have noone of this quality. Daniel Kerr is our man.:)

... and those are a dime a dozen.
I presume you are being sarcastic? Otherwise I don't reckon I'd be counting on more than my two hands the number of genuinely skilled, quick in and under players in this league. We don't have anyone approaching it. In fact I think I'd struggle to get to two hands. Yet most of them belong to the top teams in the league.

The trend has changed the last few years. It used to be only teams with great forward lines and dominant tall forwards could win flags. That changed with the Eagles winning one. Now it's all about dominant midfield's. You could have all short people in your forward line, but if your midfield is that good, they not only provide pin point delivery time and time again, they contribute to the scoring themselves.

Travis Cloke is better by himself than a lot of tall forward combos other teams have. Our midfield simply doesn't have enough class to match the top teams, even Malthouse said it after the Geelong win. We win midfield battles with hardness not skill. It will fall down when other teams more skilled bring the same level of hardness (E.G. Finals)

As good as they have been, until we can replace the likes of O'Bree, Shaw and Johnson with players whom can bring the same positives they bring but also some genuine skill and class, then we will struggle to win a flag.

Anthony has a beautiful kick and is very smart, hopefully he can fill that role of kicking 2-4 goals every match.

Accept for Pendles - A Bloody Good Midfield, not the Crap one we have at the moment

Think any diff after tonight mate..when we need it....where are they?!?!

OK, I take back some of what I said.

Our forward line is still small but JA may very well be that power forward, give him time to develop into the role and I have hope!!

You're joking. Our midfield delivery was a disgrace. Wayne Carey and G. Ablett senior would have had a hard time dominating when you combine the shocking skill level of our midfield with the fact we also moved it too slowly allowing the Kangas to flood back. Which is not to say our forwards didn't have a bad game, but our skill level by foot was truly shite.
