I'd trade Micky for Darling in a heart beat, Pitt looked like he wasn't going to make it regardless of health condition and if we got Thorp late - I'd be very happy.

Come at me.

Wot,Darlings the devil incarnate and Micky will be the next Pope.
Pitt could have been a triple Brownlow winner if not for that damn dickie heart valve and Thorpe was a dud ,is a dud and always will be a dud.

I guess the theory of 'limited forward numbers' increases a KPF's value..
Where a team has 1,2 possibly 3 key forwards, conversely will have 3,4,5 quality midfielders. We therefore look at mids and have a feeling that one ( e.g Barlow ) may be able to be dispensed because we still have Fyfe, Mundy, Hill et al .
We don't generally look at forwards the same way, unless you are Essendon in 2013.

I will balance this out by saying Mick brings a quality that is quite hard to replace, his ability to free his arms in congestion and fire out an effective handball is in the top 5% of the league. So while Lachie or sutty may fill the void, they may not have the same attribute that Micky B brings to the mix.

Secondly, I reckon a few may be pleasantly surprised with Maynes next season, he should now get the third defender more regularly and unlikely it will be the lockdown HBF - Sylvia or whichever mid is rotating on our HFF likely to attract that type. Mayne over darling ? Who knows, who cares, they add different elements to each forward line.

FWIW I was and am a darling admirer and was pi**ed when we grabbed Pitt, but I'm just as big a Barlow fan and reckon he has unique and uncanny congestion skills suited to our style

Every time Barlow is mentioned as trade bait, a cute puppy dies. Seriously, we are NOT trading him. He is pivotal to our midfield and part of the reason why we were so good this year. And no, some youngster with <50 games on our team can't just "replace" him.

Yes, we f**ked up the Pitt/Darling draft. And yes, I bet Bond and co have acknowledged that and realised that but we don't go trading our entire GF side for him. Obviously we have poorly planned our key forward prospects after Pav and that's why we have taken Gumby as the medium between Pav and a young forward we will take in the draft + Taberner etc.

We were only 15 points away from a flag, so while we are pretty desperate for a tall forward and to replenish our stocks, I don't think we are that badly troubled right now. The key is our midfield and our midfield can win a flag. WCE won a flag with Derp Lynch and Spud Hansen in their forward line.

This bolded part shows where we are at tbh. We all know that teams with poor kpfs can win premierships. Those without any at all though don't. We just need someone who can compete physically with key defenders, isn't ridiculously slow and can kick reasonably straight when required. Personally I'll be disappointed if we don't come home with a tall forward tomorrow but the fact is that at pick 17 any key forward we pick is only slightly more likely to make it than a tall picked at 37. The other options available may be too good to refuse again. It's well documented that elite key forwards come mainly from picks 1-10 but we won't have a pick in that range for quite a while.

Think you're forgetting that we just picked one up...

I have written about this elsewhere. I do not think that Bondy and co think of Pitt as a failure or Darling an obvious success. Pitt is the price of doing business. Players on average play 41 games. In this you will have duds and champs. This is not a fashionable way of saying "you win some you loose some" but more a realisation that that we are professionals and we don't bet on the maybe. You cover all the bases more than once and you put together a plan and execute it. So lets recap.
  • in 2009 our midfield was crap and old
  • there was other crap but this was the worst (Pav and McPharlin were looking after the ends)
  • Of the 2008 draftee's Hill and Balla were ok but the rest were nowhere (be honest it was hope and kisses)
  • We had to make sure we drafted to fill the gaps in the mids
  • in 2010 supporters thought we were good
  • the coaches knew better - no depth as 2011 showed
  • Still
  • Mundy was starting to play
  • That Barlow rookie went alright until he broke his leg (no dice next year the coaches and recruiters knew)
  • Hill was still Ok
  • Suban was hopeful
  • Moribito was good but gone for a year
  • And there was word on the street that some kid from lake grace was not to bad.
  • But our midfield wasn't good when Pav and Barlow weren't around (remember 2nd half of 2010)
  • So lets get some more mids and make sure (not hope) that we have the mids covered for a decade.
All in all I would say that Bondy and Co didn't miss the mark. They had a plan. They played to the plan. They got what they wanted. The results however are only disappointing because we don't need either Michie or Mello, others have passed them.
Mzungu has turned into a regular player in the mids and will pass his 41 games.
Even Pitt is not a failure. With a heart problem that eliminates your ability to sustain physical exertion he still played more games than either of the other two for us and did alright in them.
In 2011 we went looking for other things besides mids and picked up three backs, three half backs, a half forward, a medium mid, a small mid, an angry mid.
Good plan, nice focus on the backs. Of those we have Sutcliffe , Dawson, Spurr, Neale, Crozier and Sherridan that made the cut. Lower having moved on.
In 2012 the plan was talls and pace. Too early to judge.
So what's this year's plan? Forwards? It would not surprise me if we take two genuine forwards (draft), we are highly likely to take a half forward for the rookie list (Step forward Lester-Smith) and a big lump of an Irishman. Who else, I'm betting on a mid, a back and another forward (rookie) to make up the numbers.

Did we **** up with Pitt over Darling? Maybe Darling is a huge tosser and has helped bring the eagles to their current level as the players think their shit doesn't stink. Maybe Pitt having a health issue has given our whole team perspective and desire to make it happen sooner rather than later.

Maybe I just like telling myself this.

You make a valid point.

I guess my main point is that we are not desperate for Darling and we will certainly not trade someone like Barlow for him. It's frustrating how ridiculous this is and also how underrated Barlow is.

'There have been rumours that Mitch Thorp had knocked back VFL contracts before the draft last week, in the belief that he would be drafted. Sam Landsberger continues to believe that he will not be offered a rookie spot on Wednesday, either.'

Pretty sure people also said Garlett would be overlooked in the draft as well. Hopefully Thorpe hasn't been sold up the river by some of the clubs or his agent for that matter.

It was Sam Landsberger that was one of those who said Garlett wouldn't get picked up ( the day of the draft). I think he's a good young writer btw but just got it wrong.

Thorp will be rookied. Hopefully by us.
