One thing is a constant... Every year supporters think they can get a potential superstar for nothing. Whether it be a Garlett bad attitude in the draft or an injury prone egotistical delistee.

It's 1/100 to pay off and I'd prefer to keep drafting safe bets and don't get involved with chasing potential superstars "for nothing" cos here are some wise words that I'm sure the new Richmond understands: the general attitude of chasing stars for free actually will cost you in the long run.

Doesn't need to be a superstar, just needs to be better than McGuane and A. Edwards to be a success

there have been a few good players go mature in other lesser leagues before returning to try the AFL ... i think Thorp tried last years draft with no interest from clubs ... he has been playing in a lesser comp and most players ex or borderline AFL tear it up in those comps. I hope we have had people actually watching him play or I think we should pass.

For better or worse both McGuane and Edwards can take a grab and kick goals in the big league .. and both always work their ass off .... better the devil you know

Being a high draft choice first time around means little ... JON cough*

Devil's advocate to seemingly most views expressed so far... talk is that this draft is quite thin outside the first 25 or so. If the club thinks Thorp has done some growing up, and still has the talent, what's to lose? Pretty much from our 2nd rounder onwards it'll be a largely speculative proposition anyway, so at worst we get a mature guy, who has been coaching a young team, who could help out our VFL team.

Perhaps if we get GWS's 3rd rounder back in a trade for Adams that would be the pick to bite with, pre-empting those teams like Dogs, Saints (with their 3rd rounders) if they're interested.

I'd take Thorpe at the Tiges! Has had a kid and settled down and played good footy! Will come cheap and could be a high return!

He's only 24 so he could be an eight year player. He would not be hindering development of any player if he had a 150 game career with us.

Obviously the RFC would have to do its due diligence - I am sure Thorp would be tested in every parameter available. If he passes then the club should rank him in the draft order and if they think he is the best available at whatever pick then I say go for it.

My thoughts on the matter, through the medium of poetry:

Rather waste more time waiting for Griff to kick a torp....

...then waste any time on a hack like Mitch Thorp...

I think we should offer him a 9 year contract. Quality key forwards are hard to find. I don't want anyone trumping us.

Disagree - we should just extend McGoof's contract by a decade instead.

I would offer them both long term deals. What could go wrong?

Its been a long time since thorp played afl where he wasnt much good at it at the time, along with the game being slower and less defensive than what it is these days --------

6 years after he was drafted he thinks he can come back and play at this level just because he's done well at a level thats lower than vfl where McBean has been dominating

The level that Thorp is playing in tassie , Griffiths,Elton,Edwards,McGuane,McBean,Astbury would be stars
Thorp is not for us - Let carlton take him ................They are desperate to replace Waite

My memory is not great but along with the poor attitude, didn't he also have doggy knees or ankles? Talent was never the issue. I'm calling Saints or Doggies in the 3rd round. No source, just a guesstimate.

Yep, he was ruined by injuries. No player has ever been delisted for arrogance alone (otherwise you'd have to ditch half the league) - he had injuries and poor form as well.

I'd look at him if he was still there with our later picks. He's clearly more talented than Griffiths, Edwards etc., but can he make the step-up? He also plays the type of role we sorely need in our team, which is a plus. I think the recruiters will be well aware of him and I'm happy to back their judgement of where he's at.

No need for him what so ever, would just be a wasted pick. Leave him to clubs that actually need forwards. We have Mcbean, Griffths and Elton all progressing nicely at 19,22,20. All them are only few pre seasons from becoming regular fixtures. Which is why we are in no hurry to offer aaron edwards or Luke Mcguane new contracts.

Don't understand how we supposedly already have to many players in his position. He plays as a CHF which we have two players capable of playing this position they being Astbury who is better suited in the backline and Elton.

When considering Thorp we should leave the likes of Vickery, McBean, Jack, McGuane, Griffiths and Edwards out as they play very different roles and will never be true a CHF that Thorp is for his team and what Elton will hopefully develop into. Which we should be looking for a true CHF in N.Riewoldt mould as you can build a team around them. Not that we are in need of building a team around a particular player.

Was talk of the next big thing at Hawthorn at one stage so he was highly rated and i do remember he looked like he really had something in his early senior games.

If he can work hard enough he could b anything imo

Attitude injurys and figjamness were his downfall i believe.
