This whole situation is a bit puzzling.

Did anyone listen to the ABC podcast from Friday? Cowan and Middlemass run it.

By what way is Marsh still available for test cricket? Did the selectors tell him they may still pick him? Did Marsh tell the selectors he would still play test cricket if he was picked? Given how sheepish he was about it becoming public I think the latter is what happened.

How is puzzling?

He announced that he will retire from first-class cricket at the end of the season. Ergo, he is available for test cricket in the extremely unlikely event he would be selected for either Melbourne or Sydney.

This is all a massive over-reaction to Andrew McDonald simply being polite when asked about Marsh at a press conference in Perth.

The podcast audio. Was clearly sheepish about it. Even said he didn’t want it public knowledge.
He was referring to his decision to retire. He didn't want a fuss. That's all.

The grab you refer to in that podcast was 10 seconds long, and from a 16 minute interview in which he talks about his test career in the past tense, and says "I'm not chasing test cricket". At one point the interviewer said we might see him in the Ashes and he just laughed.

By definition, if he is retiring from first-class cricket at the end of the season, he is available for the rest of the Ashes and of course would say yes if asked. But he won't be asked.
