Here we are - FINALS FEVER - of sorts. The finals are now upon us, and we bid farewell to 8 teams.
Should be a classic finals series.
And I say again - I HAVE NOT RIGGED THIS COMP! The Bombers are on top, but it is my team of no-names who are doing the damage.
Anyway, here's the final round results:
West. Bulldogs 1143 defeated Hawthorn 935
The Final Round of the home and away season kicked off with the 4th placed Western Bulldogs taking on the 10th placed Hawthorn. Hawthorn were out of the finals race, but were looking to finish the season off on a good note. The Bulldogs knew that a win would all but cement them a top 4 spot, ensuring the double chance. The game ended up being a game of two halves. The first half saw Hawthorn get on top of the Bulldogs, with David Neitz continuing his sensational form reversal. Hawthorn's defence proved the telling factor in the first half, with Mark Graham and Jade Rawlings brilliant across the backline. Hawthorn held a very comfortable lead at half time, and were primed for a huge upset. But something happened in the second half, both to Hawthorn and the Bulldogs. Brad Johnson layed a big bump on Hawks midfielder Simon Black early in the third quarter, and this seemed to spark the Bulldogs. Johnson dominated the Bulldogs forward line, Brad Scott and Craig McRae were brilliant in the midfield, and Martin Pike was sensational across half back. David Wirrpunda floated forward late in the final term for a cameo appearance, as the Bulldogs held off a galant Hawthorn to win the game by 208 points. The Bulldogs go into the first week of the finals on a high, although they may have lost young ruckman Stephen Doyle with an ankle injury.
Fremantle 1019 defeated Kangaroos 493
Fremantle's injury list was going by the week, with key forward Daniel Bradshaw and midfielder Tyson Stenglein joining Scott Welsh & Brodie Holland on the sidelines with finals looming, as well as Dale Kickett retiring. Dockers coach FreoDocker knew that his side had to get over the Kangaroos in a big way to chalk up some confidence before the finals. In what turned out to be a one sided game, Fremantle indeed used this game to get their out of form players into some form. The star of the game was youngster Corey Enright, who was given free reign through the middle with the Dockers experimenting with their players. James Hird also got some much needed match practice with a silky display across half back, and Chris Scott and Ben Mathews also revelled when pushed into the middle. By the end of the match, the Dockers had star players Jeff Farmer, Nathan Buckley, Brent Harvey and Hird all on the bench, giving them a rest before the finals. For the Kangaroos, it was their worst display for the year, with Damien Peverill the best of a bad bunch. The Dockers were never headed, running out 526 point winners, and almost certainly ensuring a home final. The Dockers may have worries during the week, with Nathan Buckley reported for misconduct in that he wiped his blood on an opposition players jersey.
Geelong 915 defeated Collingwood 892
One of two games involving teams not in the finals on Saturday was between Geelong and Collingwood. Both sides were playing for pride, but the was both sides were throwing themselves at each other in the first quarter, you could have been mistaken that this was for finals spots. Both sides traded goals all game, with both sides giving it their all. Glenn Archer was Collingwood's best in the unfamiliar position of Centre half forward, with Daryl Wakelin solid across half back, and Mark Bickley and Peter Burgoyne good in the middle. But the difference again was Steven King. King was able to beat any ruckman Collingwood threw at him - David Hille, Steven Alessio, Anthony Rocca & Ray Hall were no match for the Geelong bigman's dominance. King turned a tight struggle into a ruckman clinic as Geelong held a modest margin at three quarter time. Collingwood tried hard for one last comeback, but with Geelong's little men Paul Chapman, Adrian Cox & Mark Johnson getting first use from King, and with Darren Milburn and Adam Goodes stopping Collingwood's forward attacks, the Cats were able to hold on and get their fourth win of the season by a meagre 23 points.
Richmond 1039 defeated Brisbane 545
The second game involving non-final sides was at Colonial Stadium between Richmond and Brisbane. Richmond have been one unlucky club, with injuries keeping key players Peter Everitt, Matthew Lloyd, Mark Mercuri, Shane O'Bree and Mark Merenda out for major parts of the season, along with the premature retirement of Jason Snell. But when an unlucky club can play against the winless bottom side in the final match of the season, it eases the pain somewhat. Richmond fielded its strongest side in a while to take on Brisbane, who was giving rookie Darren Bradshaw, the brother of Fremantle's Daniel, his first game. Richmond had the game won by quarter time, which then gave Richmond coach pickos_chick the chance to try players in foreign positions. Matthew Lloyd found himself at fullback on rookie Bradshaw, Troy Simmonds was playing at full forward, Cameron Ling was taken off Luke Power and was played as a small forward, and Troy Wilson surprisingly playing Centre half back on Mal Michael. With the Richmond players all over the place, Brisbane was able to put a bit of respectability on the scoreboard, with Luke Power probably best on ground after Ling was taken off him, as well as youngsters James Rahilly and Jess Sinclair. Troy Cook and Scott West, who weren't moved around, were Richmonds best. The Tigers were never threatened and ran out 494 point winners, snapping a three game losing streak to finish off the season with a win.
Port Adelaide Magpies 1068 defeated St. Kilda 1017
St. Kilda travelled to the newly named AAMI Stadium to take on the Port Magpies in the hope of spoiling Port's finals plans. St. Kilda was boosted by the return of Michael Voss, so confidence was high. The Saints started well, with Michael Voss looking right at home in the middle for St. Kilda. Youngster James Gallagher was playing his best game for St. Kilda, with he, Voss and Peter Walsh continuially winning the ball in the middle, forwarding the ball to Alastair Lynch, who was on fire. Late into the second quarter, Michael Voss was made to lunge for a mark in the forward line, which seemed to twinge his injured groin. Voss left the ground, to which St. Kilda lost direction. Port kicked the last 3 goals of the half to get the momentum. The Magpies used this momentum to take the lead late into the third quarter, with Steve McKee dominating the ruck, giving first use to Paul Williams, Ben Harrison and best on ground Tyson Edwards. St. Kilda rallied in the last quarter, but Port held on for a 51 point win. Port Coach Scott seems to have a few worries leading into the finals with some of his key players not performing up to speed for the second week in a row.
Glebe Power 1099 defeated The Chuck Mullholland Swans 898
Chuck was another club who have been rocked by injuries this season, and when key players like Chris Tarrant, Ben Holland, Robert Harvey, Heath Black & Peter Vardy miss big chunks of a season at one time, you're not going to win too many games. And when your final game of the season is against the third placed Glebe Power, finishing the year happy isn't going to be easy. Glebe finally welcomed back Michael Gardiner after playing just one of the past 8 games. Glebe was almost at full strength for this game, and it showed why they are firming as premiership favourite. Gardiner slotted back into the side brilliantly, playing out of full forward. Fellow big man Luke Darcy was again brilliant for Glebe in the ruck, and Paul Kelly and Jarrad Schofield also great in the midfield. Unfortunetly for Chuck, Glebe had the game all but sewn up by three quarter time, to which they rested their key players. With Scott Camporeale and Luke Darcy off the ground, Chuck was able to put their mark on the game, with Luke McPharlin thrown in the ruck and doing a good job, and Ryan Houlihan playing brilliantly as a rover. But Glebe were never headed, winning by 201 points, and securing a top 4 spot.
Melbourne 1206 defeated Team Red & Blue 1052
The match of the round took place at Colonial Stadium on Sunday between 2nd placed Melbourne and 5th placed Team Red & Blue. Melbourne were coming off a horror month, with two losses and a narrow win over Collingwood. But a confidence and percentage boosting win over Brisbane wasjust what Melbourne needed, with finals looming and having to face the in form Team Red & Blue. Team Red & Blue were the current flag favourites, on the back of an 8 game winning streak. But Melbourne was going to be a huge challenge for them. Melbourne began well, with Daniel Chick finally finding some form. Team Red & Blue were with Melbourne at half time, thanks to a great game from th inform Des Headland. The Second half was one of the best for the year, with both sides going very hard at the ball. Lance Whitnall was a casuality for Melbourne, as was Peter Matera for Team Red & Blue. It was a small man's game, with Chick and Andrew Thompson keeping Melbourne in front of Team Red & Blue, who had Jason Johnson and Shane Crawford playing some of their best footy for the year. The turning point game early in the last quarter. Melbourne were trailing slightly when Des Headland got the ball from the middle, and blazed away for goal with 3 teammates completely open in the forward line. Melbourne then took the ball the length of the field where Nick Holland kicked a goal to put the Demons in front. Melbourne then got more confidence, and with Holland dominating the final term, Melbourne were able to kick clear of a desperate Team Red & Blue and win the game by 154 points. Team Red & Blue's winning streak stopped at 8, and Melbourne are on a huge high after securing at least a top 4 spot, if not top 2.
Essendon 1127 defeated West Coast 861
The final game of the home and away season was set to be another ripper between top of the table Essendon and 8th placed West Coast. After certain results went their way, West Coast knew that only a huge win against the Bombers would see them move up the ladder, so the pressure was off West Coast somewhat. But the pressure on the Bombers was intense, with a loss seeing them drop out of the top 2. The game was played in heavy conditions, so the big men weren't meant to dominate. But someone forgot to tell Greg Stafford, who excelled in his first game back after suspension. Stafford was the dominate player in the first half, giving his midfielders first use, with Joel Bowden the recipiant for Staffords dominance. Essendon had a very comfortable lead at half time, and with the rain approaching, it looked like a match winning lead. But after half time, West Coast clicked into gear, with Josh Francou and Chad Fletcher sensational. Dean Cox was able to quell Stafford's dominance in the ruck as West Coast made a charge at Essendon. But Bombers coach mongrelpunt played the conditions perfectly, so when the Eagles midfielders got tired in the heavy conditions, Essendon brought on fresh legs Chris Judd and Steven Greene who dominated the final quarter between them and helped the Bombers beat the Eagles by 266 points. The win secured the Bombers the minor premiership, and sets up a very even but interesting next 4 weeks of finals.
