He wasn't asserting that he thought The Beatles were more important or prolific than Jesus, rather that at the time of Beatlemania, society was more enthrawled by the Fab Four than they were of religion/ faith. At the time of his comment, this was probably true. His statement was merely an observation on British culture, rather than a blasphemous opinion.
