I am liking what I see here. Could be a special player in the making

( actually i notice there is a bit of 'mot love' in the autopsy thread so maybe this thread should be merged . sorry ; read first post later:oops:)

Once he develops more composure running into goal and starts steadying himself, He'll become a special player.

Not too dissimilar to Wojo in full flight.

He has become VERY important to us. When he gets the ball he breaks the play open with his pace. And slowly but surely he is getting more and more of the ball.
Now has to work on his finishing - both to teammates and also at goal.

Many like to criticise Motlop, but fail to understand how young he is and the season lost from that shoulder courtesy of Brad Soulle of Hawthorn.
Last year he kicked 26 goals and you could see he'd developed and the confidence was growing.
This year with added maturity, body strength, and the knowledge gained, he was always going to step it up.

He's getting the ball much more than he was last year which I think shows maturity and a willingness to run harder, which bodes well for his future...

good to see Stevie M getting some kudos, he was excellent for us in the first half of 2011 and he continues to show that he has all the makings of a very good creative, attacking footballer - his style of game lends itself to the odd embarrassing mistake, he tries to make things happen and sometimes they don't come off, bit like Stevie J.
I hate it when he makes a blue and one of our own supporters will say 'well, he is a Motlop' - it's a lazy criticism imo.

if he could kick goals instead of points and make some better decisions he could be elite

He was very good first half of last year, and has stepped up to another level this year.
Hopefully the kicking accuracy will come, as it did with Jetta and (eventually, some days) with Wojo.

That Brad Soulle, what a bastard eh.

Yep, Motlop an immensely valuable player so far this year, vastly improved from last year already. If he and Varcoe can stay relatively injury free over the next 5-8 years, and Geelong can develop another strong bodied midfield that wins clearances etc, our forwards will have lots of opportunities.

Agreed but both of these were much better this week than the last. :thumbsu:

Brad Sewell? Wasn't the shoulder courtesy of Hawkins smashing into him going for a mark?

That last goal showed signs of a player who is learning. Took his time to slow down, steady and deliver. His game this week was much better than the one against North, and even then he was certainly very dangerous, just let down with some poor finishing.

He only has 30 games under his belt and I expect that he will continue to come good. It's great to have a replacement excitement machine after the retirement of Wojo.

I really like the X factor that Mots brings and his pace and skills are electric near sublime. Some of his decisions and delivery are SJ like. I have given him a spray before for being a bit hungry like KB and for spraying them all over the place a bit.

As you said Copernicus, his decision to slow 1/2 a step, steady and deliver gives me real hope that much more polish is yet to come. Now with TV on the sidelines, he will become even more important.

Go Catters

No, I was listening to that game, Mots first, and I'm certain he was badly crunched and went straight off after being lined up.....it set him back a season and a half I reckon.
Good thing is, it's strengthened over time.
Just wish Murdoch would come on quicker, had a great pre-season but seems to be struggling ATM, we could do with his outside speed as well.

I was at the game and it was Hawkins in a marking contest.

Motlop's game was over in the second quarter, when he was crunched in a marking contest.

Some good signs from him, but far from having to create a toast thread whenever a player shows a little bit, it would probably be wiser to create one when he shows that his finishing is beginning to match his current progress in other areas.

Will be a ripper player in another couple of years when he becomes a little older and wiser.

He glides across the ground like a very good player. I love the way his team-mates give him the ball whenever they can, that will feed on itself and make him a more confident and damaging player.

The pure absurdity of the debate around indigenous players will be highlighted when Motlop and Jetta line up on Friday night and burn up and down either wing with relentless running.

Motlop runs with the effortless grace and power of a track athlete.

Im struggling to remember a time when our listed indigenous talent is as strong as now.

Motlop could be the most talented player on our list. Full stop. He has fluency that few have , but just like Varcoe there is an element of fragility to him. I fear he will always be only a hair away from injury.

If I remember correctly , he was gathered with the pick for Prismall , doesn't look a bad deal now.

Looking at him now compared with last year he just seems bigger, especially in the chest and shoulders, even looks taller somehow. He's much stronger now than before so I'm reasonably confident of his ability to survive the contests.

We got the good 'lop alright. Could as good or better than Jetta circa 2012 (and he was pretty bloody good). Note: comparison based on them being speedy, line breaking goal kicking wingmen rather than both being indigenous. Jetta looks the more fluid player but Motlop is the more explosive and has better touch to my eye.

Will be a great day for the GFC and therefore the world when all our indigenous boys play in the same side at the same time.

Tigers and Dons can have their dream time game, we will bring the real stuff. :thumbsu:

Didn't rate him at all last year but must say he's the one that has really impressed me this year. With a bit more goal sense he could be anything.

I think you can really see the battle in his mind between instinct and what's he's been taught in his decision making, and he's still learning the balance between the two. That said, he's clearly elevated his game this season - averaging 20 disposals, up from 13. What's most gratifying is the way that, even when he gets the ball in congestion, he's got the acceleration to put enough of a gap between him and his opponent(s) which in turn gives him the time to make those decisions.

Two years ago it was looking like a trade we'd lost. Little doubt we've done better out of it now. But what I reckon is also interesting is the player we could also have had...Port Adelaide took Matthew Broadbent. Judging from the long pause that followed from Wells I strongly suspect we were very keen on him. He's now established himself and is looking like a very, very good midfielder for Port. Interesting all round.
