Let me preface this by saying that the past 2-2.5 years have been very hard for me mentally. I’ve been diagnosed with generalised anxiety and depression, and generally have been up and down with my mental health since. Generally speaking I’m doing a lot better than the place I’ve come from.

Anyways, I’ve been living at home with my parents for the also 4 months due to a work opportunity that required me to move out of Perth. We’ve been talking a lot about what my next move will be, and my Dad suggested I should move interstate; specifically to Melbourne, and enjoy having a clean slate where I can wash away a lot of the past two years of BS and build myself up from there. He argued it would a lot cheaper cost of living and that I’d grow a lot from such a move.

I don’t really know why, but the idea has stuck in my head ever since. I‘m already in a long distance relationship as is with someone who lives 4 hours from where I currently live in WA. Who I’m not willing to give up, it’d be a shock to not be around my family, but overall I can see a lot of positives to such a move.

Sorta reaching out here. Has anyone made such a move interstate? What are some Pros and Cons? Or things I may not be aware of surrounding such a move? My parents have already told me they’d support me financially if it’s something I want to do “While I’m young”.

I did. I was 35 married and two kids under 5 but knew noone where i moved to (southern gold coast) and al my family were/are in perth.
now 7 years on altho divorced (but amicable with ex and sharing kids 50:50 and she lives 10 mins down the road), best thing i ever did.

will your gf come with you?
can you both get work in your fields?
If you can get work thats the key. Everything revolves around having an income.

will your gf come with you?
Most likely not. She’s part of a big farming family out on the wheatbelt and she’s destined to always be involved with that.

I can definitely get work in my field. It’d just be the starting from nothing and knowing no one thing I’d have to deal with.

You sound a fair bit like me.

I feel a lot more self-confident having moved interstate. Doubly so as I was moving out of the family home, but it's immensely satisfying to feel yourself becoming self-sufficient and independent. I think staying in your home city makes that harder to do.

Several months in, I don't see many people socially outside of work (I'm fairly introverted which doesn't help.) Most of the time I'm happy enough with my own company, but I imagine a lot of different personality types could struggle with that.

I'd be a bit unsure about moving so far away from your GF if you're intent on making that last - an even longer long-distance relationship would be difficult to sustain, especially if you're then trying to focus on your career and new social life in a new city.

Have done it three times all with varying levels of success. As this would be your first, I'd suggest doing the following:
  • Get an apartment fully furnished, if you know someone in Melbourne who can look over one for you, great, if not maybe look for short stay accommodation. Just have something that isn't a hotel lined up for when you arrive.
  • If an apartment is not an option, you should be able to find a room in a sharehouse. Worst case scenario you buy a cheap mattress and throw it on the floor in a bedroom.
  • Be very aware of where your employment will likely be, make your housing decision based on this.
  • Don't rely on work being your only avenue for friends, join a sporting club, book club, or whatever club within the first few weeks. You wont have any issue finding other likeminded orphans within a suburb or two from where you live.
Housing was the only real grievance I ever had. Travel light, don't lock yourself into a long lease agreement and avoid buying furniture, whitegoods, etc etc until you're sure you'll be there a while.

Thought I'd update this and say it's happening. I broke up with my girlfriend about a month ago, and given some time to reflect on everything I feel a clean slate and a fresh start is what I need to find myself.

Fellow residents of Melbourne, what are the suburbs I should be targetting for housing?

I moved to Melbourne just under 2 years ago from the Apple Isle, so maybe I can lend a hand as someone who was clueless about Melbourne. What's important to you, housing wise? Proximity to the city? Beach? Affordability?

Not a super big beach person, so proximity to the city whilst still being relatively affordable would be the big things for me

You could look at the northern suburbs. The houses are pretty affordable (for Melbourne) once you hit the Brunswick sort of area, and you won't have to live in a shoebox. Plenty of trams, too.

I’m moving to Victoria next month too
For a mix of personal reasons and work reasons
WA will always be home but I’m excited about the change
And I’ve already bought a Vic Platinum Eagles Membership for 2020.

But wat would I know, we either play you in Perth or Hobart

What's the rude shock?
Much less booing
I have been to many games in Vic (too many to count ) because I tend to fly in for 1-2 every year and the main difference is that the opposition boos are actually audible :p

Being the away team in Vic is still much less hostile than being the away one in SA or attending an away derby win :D

Get a job first if poss, dont sign a lease until you know where you are working. Commute can be horrendous by car.

Great place to live Melbourne, good luck.

I would recommend to anyone moving to Melbourne that if you can't live close-ish to the CBD (say a ring as far North as Preston, as far East as Chadstone, as far West as... no idea never really been past Yarraville except to get to the Great Ocean Road) then reconsider the move.

If you are moving from outer suburban Sydney then Melbourne is probably cheaper and better in terms of transport, but outer suburban Melbourne is pretty uninspiring and getting around by car can be horrendous. I see Melbourne as mini NY/London in terms of how people see it from the outside. Can be a big difference between reality and expectation. Cool laneway bars in the city and trendy restaurants on Chapel St are great but you can't just pop down if you live in Deer Park.

Games in Victoria are different because the make up iof the crowd varies so much.

WC have played 22 home games, 2 away games and 3 finals at Optus Stadium in two years. Every crowd has been between 50k and 60k with the exception of two 47k crowds, and every crowd except the 2 away derbies has been 95%+ WC fans. Big crowds, one way support, full stadium.

Our away games in Melbourne (ignoring any GFs) are usually a few thousand WC fans and then anywhere from 15-20k to 60k opposition fans. WC playing at the G in front of 20k people is a terrible atmosphere. WC playing in front of 60k foaming Pies/Tigers fans is the opposite of what happens in Perth. Some of our away games at Marvel have a decent atmosphere because the crowd aren't as spread out.

Similar applies for any game in Victoria. Richmond had 94,000 to the prelim against GWS the other year, that would've been insane. Melbourne vs Collingwood on Queen's Birthday drew 74k, the same fixture again in August 32k. Completely different atmospheres. Melbourne teams vs non-Victorian teams played at Marvel/MCG usually have crowds of 20-40k and are played in stadiums that hold 55k and 100k respectively.

Nah, Vic fans are every bit as passionate as Perthites. Less passionate, take in a Tiges game ...
Passion is expressed differently on the South East Coast, especially with a 50/50 crowd mix you would never get the whole crowd booing
Excessive 100% crowd Booing is so West Coast

Total horse shit. You ever seen a Crows home game? Richmond at home vs a non-Vic side? St Kilda at home vs anyone? Booooo.

Footy crowds are the same everywhere. You get a different dynamic if it's a 50/50 crowd vs 80/20 vs 100/0 but Victorian footy fans are just as braindead as South Australians and Western Australians.

I would describe Adelaide and South Central Coast

But I suppose its all East from the West Coast

as I said in Victoria
you would never get the whole crowd booing...unless Gill walked on the ground

Not aware of the fence that divides east & west, the rabbit proof fence, erected after Vic started the rabbits off in the 1800s.

I dont know if theres any tips, have enough money,do what makes you happy and move and see what happens.

My first move was sell everything in Melb move to NSW to a job/biz... site unseen.
We hated it and then moved to our place in Qld, then to the UK ,then Melb, then to FNQ, then to Melb, then back to our place in Qld again.... theres probably a few more moves to go,it might be somewhere in Australia or OS ...I dont know yet.
