Sorry to hear that Topjars.:( I don't know anyone with it, or know a lot about it, but our thoughts are with you.

And hope you have a good Christmas.:) :)

To topjars,

Sorry to hear you have MS.

There is an old lady on our street who has MS. She walks all day long and is known as "the walking lady". I think she walks a lot to keep on top of the disease, but her limbs still shake a lot and she walks awkwardly.

I'm not totally sure what causes MS, or what happens when you have it, but the walking lady looks as though she has parkinsons disease i.e. she is shaky. It hasn't affected her upstairs though.

Its basically your own immune system attacking the myelin (a bit like insulation) around the nerves in the Central Nervous System.

This distorts signals from brain to limbs = numbness, tingling, fatigue etc

The boffins are working on a cure but as of yet no cure exists.
Drugs can be taken to alter the course of the disease and if I can get my head around it I begin this immuno-therapy in January.

I guess that rules me out playing the Crows:D

Sorry to hear that Topjars....is that not the disease that has afflicted Richard Pryor? Don't be too disheartened though, they have made a lot of progress with its treatment over the last decade or so.

Do they still do the read-a-thon?

Topjars - my thoughts are with you. I have a good friend who has MS, diagnosed in her mid-30s with two little kids. She's doing well - has her good days and her bad days but keeps up with her medication and has joined a support group which helps a lot. Generally she has a slow moving form of the disease, which is lucky.
As far as I can see, MS has the best and most well-organised fund-raising division of a lot of the "major" illnesses, so there should be a cure not too far away.
Good luck!!

My Aunt has MS.She is staying with us on holidays at the moment from Victoria.

She has had it for about 10 years, and is still able to do everything she used to. She has the non progressive type. She is on a lots of mediciations, and the humidity affects her.

Mum has a friend who has it as well, he has had it a few years longer than my Aunt. He is still working full time, and rides his bike to work.He has adjusted his lifestyle a bit as he gets a bit tired, but apart from that is fine.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that topjars

A friend of mine was swimming at the beach one day when she got hit in the head by a surfboard. She couldn't walk after that but the doctor couldn't find any reason why the surfboard would have caused it. They did further tests and discovered that she had MS. Being hit in the head was just a coincidence.

My dad has a variant of MS. He has difficulty walking as he does not possess full control of his legs. He has taken it quite badly and is very depressed about it not being able to do things that many of us take for granted like driving to the shops or go for a walk in the park.

MS affects different people in different ways. Many people that have been diagnosed still have full active lives and you probably wouldn't even pick it that they have MS unless they told you. I hope all goes well for you. On the bright side, dad's doctor believes a cure for MS will be found within the next 10 years.

My Mum has MS and has had it for at least 10 years, yet if you were to meet her you wouldn't notice that anything was 'wrong'. I guess it has varying degrees of seriousness.

Sorry to hear it topjars.

Anyway, all the best, topjars.

Just like to send my best wishes to you as well.

Also, thanks for having the courage to let us know about it and that it can happen to anyone at any age. These are the sorts of things that many of us don't know about until it happens personally. But I guess that was sort of your point eh!

Good luck again. :)
