MSN Problems - Or Computer Problems, Something's wrong!

OK Here's the situation.........

I downloaded a dodgy file on the computer off Kazaa mad: ) I therefore deleted it straight away, yet it still *&^%ed up the computer and all the programs that are down near where the clock is (Speakers, Winamp, Mouse, Kazaa and MSN)

After de-fragging the hell out of the computer I have got everything back up and running down there except MSN, the icon will still not show and I have tried to reinstall it but nothing.

I have down Norton Anti Virus and this has shown no viruses on the computer.

MY QUESTION

Does anyone have any more ideas of how I can get MSN back up and running?

Is it just my computer or have others had similar problems? It is really $%^&ting me up the wall!

Mine's fine.

If it's not down near the clock it must be in "Program Files" surely? Otherwise you'll have to download it again.

Try reinstalling again, but this time go into the registry and delete all traces of messenger, deinstallations often leave unwanted settings.

To do this

1/. Deinstall Messenger as per normal

2/. Go to 'Start', 'run' and then type in 'regedit' and click on ok.

3/. Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER then Software then Microsoft then MessengerService (if present), then press delete to remove the MessengerService key.

4/. Do the same with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService.

5/. You might also want to check to see if there is an entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for msmsgs.exe as well as at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. If there is delete the entry (Not the run key, the entry will have a name like 'MSMSGS'). These entries are the 'run at startup' commands.

6/. Close regedit

7/. Install messenger as per normal

Word of warning though. You don't get second chances when amending the registry, and changes are instant. Bugger up the registry and you may need to reinstall the entire system.

Download Fix It Utilities then unistall MSN then run The registry fixer in fix it utilites that way you can't fook anything up
