Tim Holobowski's a multiple B&F at Rams and three-time premiership player, plus there's young Alex Hay who had a good season at Benalla last year. And then all the others like Lumber from Blighty, Gilligan from Jerilderie and Jack Lloyd (brother of Sam) back up forward which adds depth - the main thing Deni was lacking last year.

Yep I would say Deni well and truly out in front this year based on that............. with Nathalia and Tongala being their biggest rivals, each having recruited well and lost nothing.......... I'm hearing Moama is putting a very nice list together that will challenge for a finals appearance, and United are quietly talking their chances up about going 1 step further in 2015 also............ I haven't heard of any loses from Barooga yet, only gains, which means they'll be there abouts again and could potentially good the extra mile, but im basing that mainly on their coach rather then their list......... Mulwala always seem to be able to put a good team on the park, and if they've still got their fullforward and midfield brigade, I wouldn't suggest taking them lightly........... With Finley's list from last year, providing no injuries, I think quietly they will be come good by seasons end but a finals appearance will depend on their start of the season under their new coaches............
Which is all good news and makes for a very competitive competition again this year, or at the very least a close top top 6.............. The only ones "I'm" uncertain about are Congupna, Cobram and Numurkah. I haven't heard anything coming out of Congupna at all, which isn't a worry as they always manage to put together a competitive list and what ever senior team they put out on the park, they always seem to be able to play well as a team.
Cobram is a concern, all I've heard in passing is that they've lost their coach from last year and they best player, but hopefully they've gained a few and are keeping their cards close to their chest.
And Numurkah are going about their business quietly, though I think they are doing alright in the cricket at the moment and that might be where their focus is for the moment. However as the season approaches I think we'll be hearing more from them.

Can someone please tell me about Mitch Sidebottom from Congupna?
I'm from a club in Bendigo and we met with him last week and he was asking a fair bit of $$$.

He said he was probably the number 1 ruckman in the league last year but his fox sports results say otherwise... Anyone tell me if he's any good or not?

The big Moo was on big money at congupna in 2013, then took a pay chop last season.. Goes pretty good ruckman that can go forward and kick a couple.. I'd say he'd be wanting 800.. That sound rite...

I think Deni will improve alright, dont think too many are getting ahead of themselves. I think there is more excitement around the club with the return of some "locals", but having some guys wanting to prove themselves is just as exciting i think. They still have to gel and play as a team for any success. Think this season could be just as even as last year which is great for us spectators.

My belief was that he was coaching the U/17s as he is recovering from injury, and was only an outside chance to play himself in the 2nd half of the season.

Has lodged a clearance to Lorne. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Yeah could be a good side NFB, the "could" is the part thats got to be proved. Some off the boys were a bit undisciplined at times last year. They need to show they have matured. At least they will have depth this year so those that stuff up will be back in the two's.

His best football is well behind him, had a very ordinary year last year. Good luck to Mulwala dealing with his SH&@ on and off the field. The guy is a strange unit from all reports couldn't care less about his team mates, it's all about him!!

That aside, he's been one of the better suburban/country footballers in the state for a long time. His best is unstoppable.

Salary cap would be great but given that all payments are cash under the table it would be ineffective.

A points system could work as it promotes junior development, however the allocated points given to players are often an inaccurate guide of how talented they actually are. For example -ex afl player 8 points. Say he played 2 afl games and to be honest isn't even dominant at local league footy. Then you've got the guns who have always been a big fish in a little pond, might be worth 1 point. When the big fish could quite easily be more talented than the ex afl player, it seems unfair that the club has to lose 8 points for an average player. Would also make it hard for the ex afl player to find a home club.

Be happy to see a points system trialled, but whatever is done probably needs to be Australia wide, otherwise the first neighbouring league that doesnt have to work within the same parameters will have a distinct advantage.

I have no problems with teams signing big names players on huge coin. Looks what has happen to Cobram and Toc. It's a big risk. Then on the flip side look what had happened with Rumba in the short term. Them winning the flag is awesome for the league.


Recruit the right guys and ur club will be better off in the future. Local clubs work hard for there money. Some choose to buy success others choose to upgrade facilities/ pump in to junior development.

I know my local cricket club has one, depending on the standard of the league the recruits are from determines the amount of points they're worth. And for every year they stay at the same club, their value drops 1 point. That seems an effective way to field your locals because that then creates room for big recruits.

But definitely something needs to happen soon. I know the Ballarat regional sides have a limit of 2 VFL players per game, that too of course has it's pro's and con's.

Recruit the right guys and ur club with be better off in the future.

Salary cap - easily rorted, how could it be policed when there are so many ways to pay off the club books.
Points system - admin nightmare, actually think smaller clubs in minor leagues with huge fluctuations in junior numbers may be at a disadvantage in the long run??

I think this is key Hank. Something needs to happen because the current state of football in general in regards to payments is ridicules and seriously getting out of had. But what ever is rolled out needs to be blanket rulings Australia wide with the exception of say the state leagues, and perhaps the top 3 leagues in each state...........

Yes, but started by clubs paying too much.

YES!

Yes and the more money is spent badly the less people will bother to volunteer. it's annoying when kids get in some cases more for playing footy than in their jobs especially if they are apprentices. So in a way it also undervalues real work.

Butler snapped his Achilles, had surgery won't play this season , not sure about Newman had lots of injuries in the last couple of years at ky though.

Correct on Butler, even the Free Mess was over that! Paulo is flying and was leading the way Monday and Wednesday night!!
