Tongala members voting on the name change I mentioned weeks ago on Monday at their AGM. Worth $30 000 a year for 3 years to wear Bulldogs Jumper and be The Greenham Bulldogs. Should be a no brainer. Hopefully the old loyal members can see where the future is for a great local Club. Embrace change without forgetting the tradition.

Plenty of young loyal members that would need to be swayed too! Can't see it happening

What and why is their a requirement for them to be the bulldogs ?

Greenham are also major sponsors of the Western Bulldogs and am I guessing they want to tie Tongala in with them and create a bit of publicity for their big bucks. Speaking with one of the players and he reckons it should be supported. What other clubs get this financial windfall at this level? Otherwise that's $30k a year they have to find from the community somewhere else. Up to the members whether they think $90k over 3 years is worth the name and another jumper change.

I reckon its worth a look at!

Anyway it's not up to me it's up to the members. But if it doesn't get up I don't think I'll be in too much of a hurry to buy raffle tickets to raise money for them as I have done previously.

Interesting. I'll give a different perspective.
Footballers who take the highest $$ bid get shamed and the name of a mercenary for not playing for the "jumper" but here we have in the name of $$ the club can sell said "jumper" to the highest bidder??
I guess people will say it's progressive to sell the jumper for a sponsorship deal
I guess some will say this makes it easier on our volunteers?
Some may refuse to sell raffle tickets because said "jumper" wasn't sold.

to me you're selling your soul for a buck.

It's your jumper it's what symbolises your club, your heritage, who you are surely any change needs more to it than sponsor dollars??

I'd fully support your thinking 'IF' the name change was to increase advertising for Greenham's.
It would make more sense for the jumper change to be to Green , but I just cant see how the common person is going to associate the Bulldogs and Greenhams.

hank1 may be able to help here, but I have the feeling the change to the Bulldogs also has something to do with the fact Numurkah keeps kicking up a stink about there being two "Blues" teams in the comp.

I have been told (and this is not surprising) that the older members are the ones opposing the change, whereas the younger members are all for it. The old blokes are screaming "tradition and history..." but when was the last time the club won a premiership? How successful were the clubs later years in the GV comp?

Here's a hypothetical: club makes the change, heralds a new era for the club. Almost $100k pumped into the club's coffers, new recruits and the ability to invest in the club's youth. Then the club potentially has finals success and maybe wins a flag for the first time in years/decades.

It's hard for any Club to make a change like this, but for a club like Tongala, it will be easier if they want to. They are resilient to change, moving from the GVFL and already having to change their jumpers. You can change a leopards spots but it will always be the same underneath. Tongala will still have the same proud history and same good quality people around the club. But these are the people who decide their future, not me.

That's why I brought up tradition and history as it is important and you need a good argument to change not just for $$.
Now when you mention that there are two "blues" in the one comp and recent lack of success there is certainly an opportunity to forge a new identity and use the $$ to spark that and get it off to a good start. I'd think you'd need the view of it then remaining as the clubs identity regardless of if Greenhams continue or not.

As far as Greenhams go I associate them with Green very strongly so outside looking in I also wouldn't make the connection. That said if Greenhams are happy that way and the club is happy to go with bulldogs I guess that's ok.

But there are other clubs around with that identity. I could easily associate Tongala with Green and own nickname say "bulls" as I also associate Tongala with farming.

Just an outside opinion.

Club has won premierships in the MFL . Football and netball clubs success shouldn't be solely judged on senior football success as the fact is that side accounts for only about 15% of a clubs members , albeit considered as the marquee side. Some would also argue that many within some senior sides contribute the least off field.
I would suspect most MFL clubs would turn over in access of $350k so in perspective we are talking about less than 10% increase in revenue.
Hank would obviously know more than most the effect 30k would have on the senior playing list . However , points and salary cap would also need to come into play.

Whilst I agree with you, unfortunately this is generally how clubs gauge success. As an observer I've seen that Tongala has always had strong juniors in both footy and netball, as well as great community culture. And really, we're all just assuming that the money would mostly go towards recruitment. Maybe we're way off and it'd be pumped into the junior program. But I doubt it.

This isn't some new kid on the block business or someone from far away wanting to tip in a stack of cash...Greenhams is a long-time local operation employing an abundance of locals and supporting the community. So at the end of the day despite your breakdown, $30k is not pocket change and shouldn't be sneezed at. Whether you look at the highest league or the bush league of a sport, it's all becoming big business whether people like it or not. Those who have accepted this and adapted would generally be in better sted than those who try to oppose it.

Put it this way Roar: if you worked for someone and was offered a pay increase of 10% per year for three years but it meant you had to drive around in a car with the business' logo on the side, would you? (I know this isn't the strongest analogy, but I'm sure you get my point).

The AGM is tomorrow night and from what I have been told, the decision will be voted upon by the club's 'top tier' members (life members etc).

It's not the strongest analogy because it justifies why players change jumper colour
:) It's also far more than logo on the side of the car as all uniforms and supporter apparel would change.

Another analogy would be say Greenhams striking a partnership with Elders and Elders asking them to change to red for three years. Do you do it for extra 10% over 3 years? You'd need to consider how you feel about red after three years I would have thought.

I guess this would be the stumbling block , is the jumper change seen simply as business logo on the side of the car or is it a tattoo on your forehead.
I'd suggest a jumper change would end up being for greater than for 3 years.
Also worth keeping in mind the cost of the change , footy jumpers , netball dresses and apparel including writing off any stock on hand.
Also is it $30k more than current sponsorship and where do things sit if the offer is rejected.

They're all things I'm sure have been taken into account and considered at previous meetings, I'm not sure what the club's stance is on those points so I will wait in anticipation of the decision. Though my gut feeling is that nothing will change this year.

That was the best analogy I could come up with on this Sunday afternoon :-P

Back in the 70's, Nathalia changed colours to black and white, away from the purple and gold. This was done to bring the club into line with the Vfl clubs which, in turn, hoped to make the club more relevant to supporters and also plug into the Collingwood factor. This was an unmitigated disaster as it turned supporter against supporter with a huge falling out of friends and team mates. They lost loyal old and young supporters and improved nothing. When they went back to the original colours, the breakdown of friendships continued on for a very long time. It is one period that the club regrets and I hope Tongala, which Nathalia people have a soft spot for, does not go through the same thing. Tradition is built on loyalty and loyalty is built on tradition.
