Every time I plug the scanner into the back of my (family) computer, the mouse ceaces to operate. Then if I unplug the scanner, the mouse works again. It's bloody annoying! It means I can't use the scanner. Does anyone have a solution?

Are they both USB?
chances are you have some sort of conflict there.. Does it freeze up only when you're scanning something? that takes up a fair bit of USB's bandwidth and there might not be enough left over.
If they're parallel, serial etc devices, maybe an irq conflict of some sort (gee, it's been a while since I heard those terms!)

How does that work? I'm sure the scanner is much bigger than the poor little mouse. Perhaps you should have seperate excercise yards for the smaller peripherals?

I'm not sure if they're USB! What do USB ones look like? Both of these are small, like the normal size for a mouse. They're right next to each other. The mouse freezes up as soon as I plug in the scanner. I unplug the scanner, and the mouse works again straight away.

Definitely sounds like a hardware conflict. Unfortunately sometimes this happens. Some things just don't want to live side by side in your computer. Thats one of the reasons it is usually recommended that you buy the same product brand each time as they usually live more harmoniously together if you do. That doesn't always work though. My hubbys computer will either take a modem or an ethernet card - it chucks a complete wobbly if you try to use both, no matter what the brand you try. As far as we can tell it's his motherboard that is the problem in this case.
The only thing that springs to mind (other than trying a different scanner) is updating your drivers. If you use a driver for your mouse you might want to update that too. You can usually find the drivers you would need if you go to the manufacturers main web site.

Try rebooting before you try to print something after you have scanned ..
