I have been in Sydney the last 2 weeks for work so unfortunately I have missed both our last 2 games. Do you guys think Jones is deserving of a guaranteed spot in our team week in week out? The reason Im thinking of this is because I just ordered my new jumper and i got number 2 on the back, so I was just hoping my investment would last. So does Jones have anyone to answer to about his spot in the team? Because I have found he very much slides under the radar.

At the moment he is, but his disposal is just plain awfull. Unless he can improve his kicking i cant see him a regular in the side. We need another skillfull midfielder and when we get one i think Jones would be the 1st to go.

Maybe I'm just spitballing here, but Valenti could end up maybe forcing him out if he can't improve his disposal...

He's pace and foot skills have improved this year (despite his last game) and I think his decision making has as well. He likes to bring the ball into the corridor as well. Needs to go to another level again but at the moment I can't see Valenti ever catching him.

That said I think you are right about him going under the radar a bit. I'd love to be less into a game one day and just watch him and for that matter McLean and Moloney to see how they work around the ground.

Jonesy's disposal has been ordinary no doubt- but it will get better as our team gets better. Our team dont shepherd enough (loads more than 2008 but still not to the standard of the top teams) and as such players like Jones are under a LOT of pressure when they dispose of the ball. Jones being the inside type he is gets a lot of ball in heavy traffic and with only a few blokes regularly protecting the ball carrier (Moloney, McClean + Sylvia) it can be damn hard for him to kick effectively.

Add to that the lack of targets up forward to kick to and it makes more sense why his kicking seems to have gone backwards!

Personally I think his on the chopping block this week, his disposal has been shocking, something which bailey does not tolerate.

He has been on the extended bench a lot lately as well, not a good sign after another loss.

He's always listed on the bench, every week he is.

His disposal has been improving just this week he had a shocker disposing of the pill.

Shouldn't be on the chopping block this week, if he has another shocker then I agree he will be facing the axe but not this week.

The difference between his best and worst is still too pronounced for mine. On the basis of last week alone, I would be dropping him yet the WCE game. where he was clearly our best, is only three weeks ago.

I still believe however that if one of our younger midfielders (Buckley, McKenzie, Valenti) puts in some VFL performances worth of rewarding, Jones could be the first one out.

Jones is better than all those 3 combined. His kicking lets him down at times, his handballs are supberb his ability to draw the opposition and dish of the handball to release a team mate into spaces is second to none.

His kicking will improve, lok at Jobe Watson his kicking over the last season and half has improved enormously no reason why Jones can;t do the same as he matures.

can't agree with that. The unfortunate thing about Nugget, I don't think he would've been drafted to Melbourne if Bailey was coach during his draft.

He doesn't suit our gameplan a whole lot, lacks the leg speed, and the quick hands in close to get the ball out. Is often getting caught, because he's simply not quick enough. When we get better, and his teammates are in the right positions quicker to receive the ball, he may improve in this area, but it certainly is a big deficiency in his game which doesn't suit our gameplan right now.

His effective disposal was 48% against the Hawks.

That is horrible. However, i'd say that is his only operable flaw.

Yes, we know he's not quick, and everyone says he's not evasive enough, which i'd argue, but those things cant really be changed quickly.

His dispsoal can, and will.

There was an article in the HUN i think on him. It spoke about when he was dropped to the Magoo's last year and how it relieved alot of the pressure on him. We've got to remember that hes is still only young, but still has to put up with the pressure of playing high minutes in the middle.

I know most will say alot of young players are calable of coping with that pressure, take Pendlebury or Rich for example. The difference with them and Jonesy is that they have other gun midfielders in their respective teams taking a bit of the heat off them. Jones has McLean, Sylvia, McDonald and Maloney, of which none are superstars.

Our four main midfielders, Jones included, when playing just above their average, are pretty much on par. That puts pressure on Jones, as the youngest, because if he begins to star at the beginning of a match, the attention goes straight to him. Teams can pick and choose who their main midfield focus is when playing us because its odds on that if the main or secondary target, say McLean or Maloney, start playing average, that trend wont change for the rest of the game. Therefore Jones starts playing well, gets the tag, gets tackled more often, and gives up more of the ball.

In the end, hopefully this attention wont get the better of him, and he'll learn to get the ball away as clean as possible when under heightened pressure. Its not happening yet, but it will with time.

Thats my rant.

Go to town.

Watch the game vs the doggies two weeks ago!

Unforunately I'm starting feel that we can't run with McLean, Jones and Moloney all in the one side anymore. All three are big bodies and hard at it yet are too alike. We may need some more polish in the middle, this could be because Mortons disposal can be bad at times highlighting an overall lack of skill in the midfield yet I don't think McLean, Jones and Moloney can all co-exist.
Hypothetical, what would be get for Nathan Jones on the open market?

2nd rounder at best, if we were going to get rid of one of our midfielders I dont think Jones would be the right choice he is still only in his 3rd year. Retire Jmac this year and that will even it out a bit, we wont have so many in under types.

Jones has improved massively and was playing some great footy before last week.

Round 6: 25 disposals at 80% efficiency
Round 7: 27 disposals at 81% efficiency
Round 8: 25 disposals at 88% efficiency

Lets hope last week was an anomaly.
