Couldn't find a thread, so thought I'd start one.

Love it or hate it, it gives us a chance to try some kids and structures and so forth.

Our fixture:

Round 1: v Port and St Kilda at AAMI, Sunday, Feb 17.

Round 2: v Geelong at Skilled, Saturday, March 2.

Round 3: v Carlton at AAMI, Friday, March 8.

We get to play some decent sides (and Port) to give us a good run. All games should be winnable, even Geelong at home.

Lets get some discussion on tactics and line-ups going. Who should get a go? Who should be rested? Should we be aiming to go back to back?

Port is a losable game in the NAB cup. Depends on how much experimenting Sando does tooling around with try-out and fringe players. In a short muck around game, you just have to muck around at the wrong time and there's not enough time to set things right if things have gone bad.

IMO, talking about winnable NAB cup games a few days into January is irrational. If we lose those games are people going to want the coach sacked?

How do you figure Geelong will be winnable? Has anyone beaten them there in recent years?

I doubt they'll be fielding a full-strength side. If it was the season proper, I'd say no way, but in the NAB cup anything can happen.

Ok, settle. I'm not that worried about winning to tell you the truth. It's more about giving the boys a run against proper opposition. And it's only 6 or so weeks away... :p

I reckon Sando's just about the most safe man at West lakes behind a few guys called Dangerfield, Walker, Sloane, Jacobs, Talia and Thompson ;)

Good opportunity to see us at Kardinia Park for the first time in a few years. Usually too hard to get in there.

Richmond thumped them in last year's NAB Cup (the Cats were understrength but it was still a huge margin).

I think we will be a lot more experimental in the NAB Cup this season. Last year it was our first real hit out under Sando, first chance to test how players fit into Sando's plans, and we had a lot to prove (to ourselves as much as anyone else) having come off a couple of bad seasons.

This year, the pre-season's been a bit shorter, the coaching staff are probably a bit more comfortable in their own skins, and I think we'll see a more traditional experimental approach, rather than the full bore approach we took last season. I expect to see a lot of established players either missing games or having their minutes heavily managed, and key roles given to young players who for whatever reason were on the fringes last season - guys like Lyons, Martin, Jenkins, Jaensch, Kerridge etc being given an opportunity to stake their claim.
