Jamestown-Peterborough have won there way directly into the 2003 Northern Areas Football Association A and B grade Grand Finals by defeating Southern Flinders in both grades. It is the first year of the combining of Jamestown/Appila and Peterborugh Football clubs and the merger has been a sucess on the field.

Jamestown last won a flag in 1991 when they won there fourth straight, and have played in losing Grand Finals in 1995 and 2001 since that flag. Peterborough last won a flag in 1979 and were runners up in 1980. If they can get up in two weeks it would be an achievement . They are coached by North Adelaide games record holder and former SA captain Mick Redden.

Sundays Elimination Final saw Orroroo defeat Broughton-Mundoora by 12 goals, in a result which i thought would be a lot closer. In the B grade Broughton Mundoora defeated Orroroo, Senior Colts saw Jamestown to strong for a much improved and competive Crystal Brook and Crystal Brook too strong in the Junior Colts for Jamestown-Peterborough.

The preliminary final to be played at Crystal Brook this week:

A Grade
Southern Flinders V Orroroo (A replay of last years grand final and surely will be a great match. Injury is going to be the big concern for both clubs with a key player or 2 in doubt. To pick a result would be hard but Southern Flinders have been a class act all year but Orroroo are one of the greatest match harded big game playing sides you'll find in country footy. I'll sit on the fence and say a draw!

B Grade
Southern Flinders V Broughton Mundoora (This is a replay of last years spiteful elimination final where a wild brawl occured after the final siren and a runner was being suspensed and fined for striking, surely will be hard and physical and the result could go either way).

Colts.
Seniors - BMW V Jamestown/Peterborough
Juniors - Crystal Brook V Orroroo - Go you Brookies!

Elimination Final?????????

I wish the NAFA would stop doing that!! If I didn't have a program I'd think they were running a final five, not a final four! And I'll bet I'm not the only one!

For goodness sake - it's a first semi final!

I don't mind that so much, Kev - unless I didn't get a ladder and they have two finals and they don't tell us which one's which (the West Australian's a bad one for that - not that I need that anymore thanks to the WA Footy Forum! :) )

And if I don't have a fixture and I don't know when the finals were due to start. The only way you can tell then is if the teams competed are different. If the seniors and the magoos first semi is between the same two clubs you can get awfully confused!!

Yeah well we don't all have the advantage of having collected each and every score along the way, Phil! :p

(Did I mention to everyone that Phil has all scores ever scored, even back to when Phar Lap was playing football?) :D

But, seriously, I note we have another instance of two clubs merging and the resulting combine being the leading club the next season.

What was behind the JPA merger? Were they performing poorly, playing numbers or what?

Did I mention that Kev was around when Phar Lap won the Melbourne Cup? *ROTFLMAO* Numbat!

Seriously, Peterborough would have folded if they hadn't merged with Jamestown/Appila. They've been struggling for sometime as I recall. It was a similar situation for Laura/Wirrabara when they merged with Gladstone Combine to form Southern Flinders.

Jamestown and Peterborough merger occured as Peterborough would have gone out of existence, due to a lack of numbers. Peterborough tried unsucessfully to merge with Orroroo who are closer than Jamestowe]n but Orroroo decided against the move.

Jamestown in 2002 finished 4th in the A grade and were premiers in the B grade so with the added strength of some quality ready made "A" grade recruits they have been able to take the next step.

Gladstone and Laura/Wirraburra merger was similar in the fact numbers were a huge problem. Its a reality we all have to face with NAFA going from 10 teams in 1990 now down to 6, with my old club Crystal Brook and Orroroo the only clubs who haven't merged.

Actually Brad - if you think about it, the four clubs alongside Orroroo and Crystal Brook aren't just single mergers! I mean check this out;

1. Jamestown/Peterborough
A merger of Jamestown/Appila and Peterborough
J/A was a merger of the two places and Peterborough is a merger of three local clubs in the old Peterborough FL!
2. Southern Flinders
A merger of Gladstone Combine and Laura/Wirrabara
GC was a merger of Gladstone and Georgetown/Caltowie (another merger!) and L/W was a merger of those two places!
3. BMW
A merger of Booleroo Centre and Wilmington/Melrose
WM was a merger of those two places!
4. Broughton/Mundoora
A merger of Port Broughton and Mundoora/Wokurna
M/W was a merger of those two places!

Eat your heart out, Ouyen United!!

You also missed the one club who were 'expelled' after the 1994 NAFA season the Warnertown Wombats. Due to several on field incidents and the fact they couldn't field juniors resulted in the club being kicked out of the league.

But as you say several mergers have occured and a lot of these mergers has meant the greatest enemies have had to come together for the footy season. But come summer time when they split back to their towns for Tennis and Cricket they become rivials again and are enemies.

I was simply concentrating on the current six clubs, Brad. I knew Warnertown were a part of the league.
