... could quite possibly be the worst player ever appointed a state captain. Excluding temporary stand-ins, of course. 29 years old and still not really a regular in the team, but somehow gets to be the captain? Quite possibly the most curious selection decision I can recall since the Kiwis appointed Lee Germon to lead the Blackcaps. Seriously, what is going on in SA?

Actually... let's put state bias aside for a moment. IMHO, it is a sad statement about domestic cricket when a guy averaging 26 with the bat is made captain of a state side. Any state. Standards are definitely slipping.

Agreed. The fact we need to poach a player from another State to be captain for next year if we were fair dinkum is embarassing.

Watched him bat yesterday and was lucky to get to 20. Looked very slow to react at times and had no footwork to speak of. Got out chasing a bad ball that should have been smashed for 4.

Why shouldn't he be Captain ,, been captain in waiting for 10 years
dont need to play cricket in SA only come from the right school and have the right Job..(Makes all the Right moves, but can't play cricket).. look to the past and see when SA won the Shield they had good honest workers playing, not Admin staff playing.. ho and they had a coach that made them work

That sums up Nathan very well, he jus isn't very good. He's averaging aroud 8 this season and that is what someone of his skill level should be averaging. He's not averaging 8 because he is going through a bad run. To say that you would have to have a history of performing at FC level, and he never has (and never will).

I get so frustrated when I hear people say, 'Nathan Adcock isn't doing that well this summer' because it implys that he usually does do well and that he has to skills to make it at FC level, which is false.

Redbacks are winning lately in spite of him, not becuse of him. We are basically going into every game with one (at least) less middle order batsman then the opposition.

I can tell you why Adcock shouldnt be captain. He is simply not good enough toplay FC cricket and shouldnt be picked just becasue he is the captain. His form and talent should dictate whether he is in the team or not, so he shouldnt be.

Can carry a guy at FC level. Especially the redbacks.

Making him captain was, well .... unaustralian!

And to think that Lehmann was pushed into retirement to accomodate this guy. Lehmann circa 2020 with an extra 30,000 beers and 5,000 packs of **** under his belt would still be better than this guy is currently.

The problem for SA ultimately is that there is no-one currently in the side who you could honestly say is a guaranteed selection in the four day game.

Elliot has never performed in the four day game for SA and should be dropped other than the fact that there is no likely replacement. Even Gillespie should be on verge of getting dropped considering his season to date. And you can forget about the rest. What were SA meant to do - make Cosgrove captain??

Geez it is depressing supporting the Redbacks

Nathan - do yourself a favour champ - save yourself from further embarrassment.

Yeah - the SACA's need to get the cheque book out one would think. Get Diz, Bailey and Cullen to hand over the $$$ they got from their dodgy CA Contarcts none of them deserved and get a captain over there.

They should throw money at a Hodge/G.Bailey type who will be around for a few years but won't make it to the next step.

Adcock was probably thinkig about fighting his way back into the team when he was told he was going to captain it.

It was not fair on someone who has never made his spot secure to be made captain of the team and the burdon has totally stuffed him and the team. How he held his spot and Delmont got the flick is wrong.

Maybe they should consider importing some talent.

Our record with importing talent is about as good as Addcock's batting record.

We had Flemming here for a season or two and he just never made it onto the field.

We had Andy Flower who was not that old and he never did anything.

Then we got Elliot - who has stared in the one dayers- but has been hopeless in the Shield ever since he got here.

There is something wrong long term. Look at Cosgrove and Ferguson - they both seem to have talent and reguarly make starts but simply don't seem to have the concentration to go on with it.

Cosgrove has come down to SA standards
Ferguson does it all the time dissapoints
obviously not coached or disciplined.
Its a mental thing with Cosgrove (Comfort zone)
Ferguson ..abillity not good enough, (has had games when he should not have and comfort zone)
send both to Interstate teams.. make them work

South Australia should be looking towards WA for some batting talent next year. There are a few guys that could easily get a game for SA but cant break into the WA lineup.

Droppa and Davis are two young guys they should seriously look at.

Adcock axed for poor form
South Australia dump their captain

South Australia's selectors have axed Nathan Adcock from the Pura Cup team and handed the captaincy to his deputy Graham Manou. The move had been anticipated for some time following Adcock's poor run with the bat - he averages 13.83 in first-class matches this year - but the selectors finally lost patience and left him out of the side to face Tasmania on Friday.
The Redbacks' chairman of selectors, Paul Nobes, said the Adcock remained in charge of the limited-overs outfit and the decision was purely based on his Pura Cup form rather than the players having lost confidence in him. "We pick the cricket team, then we pick the captain," Nobes told Cricinfo. "It's a theory that's been used in Australian cricket for a long time.
"Unfortunately Nathan didn't make the team. We've been pleased with the way he's led South Australia, we're in better shape than we were at this time last year."
Nobes said it was possible the captaincy had proved an extra pressure on Adcock, who struggled to get a game early last season before averaging 46 in first-class matches by the end of the summer. "It may have, I don't know that but all I know is the second half of last year he played very, very well. It's disappointing that he hasn't made the runs he wanted to this season."
He admitted South Australia had some concerns about disrupting the team by changing their captain at a crucial point in the season, with the side bidding for a place in the Pura Cup final. "That's always an issue but at the end of the day we need to choose the best team to go on the field. We've done that and unfortunately Nathan's not in it so he can't be captain. It's so simple."
Nobes added that the news hadn't come as a surprise to Adcock. "He was aware that his position was under pressure, so he took it very, very well. He was disappointed and upset that he hadn't made runs and got the best out of himself in the Pura Cup so he was more disappointed with his own form than probably what I was telling him."
Eyebrows were raised when he was announced as captain in the off-season, given his struggle to nail a first team spot, and Nobes was reluctant to say when he thought he would return. "That's up to him about getting his form together and being ready to perform. We will give him opportunities to do that but it definitely goes back into his court to be able to perform.
"He still remains captain of our one-day side, because he still makes that team so it's nothing to do with anything other than form." In one-day cricket this season he averages 37.40 with the ball, at an economy of 6.23, and only 20.20 with the bat, whereas last year he was in the fifties. But he has overseen a handy run for South Australia in the FR Cup.
Whether Manou will also find the pressure of keeping, batting and captaining too much remains to be seen. His batting form has certainly picked up after he lost his position through most of last season, and he has made two of his three first-class centuries this summer.
"He seemed to handle [the captaincy] well last time, so he's had that experience of doing it," Nobes said. "If he hadn't done it before that may have been an issue but he actually handled it well last time he did it.
"Four years ago we gave him the job deputising for Darren Lehmann and we felt he did a good job back then. He's got his form back with the bat and his keeping is exemplary. I think he's a good leader and will do a good job."

Paul, you're 16 points off 2nd with 3 games to go. You have no chance of making the final. Start planning for 2008/09.
