Have a look at Nathan Blee, an over age backman of East Perth. I've seen him play league all year and was rarely beaten in defence. He also played well in the Foxtel cup. He is 192cm.

His numbers are good too:

123 kicks in 19 games, 140 handballs at an average of 14 disposas a game with 67 marks at an average of 3.5 per game and 47 tackles. He also recorded 76 spoils with a game high spoil count of 10.

Note also that in Blee's junior footy he played up forward but that this year with Adam Pickering as defence coach he played almost exclusively in the back 50.

Now compare this to Harry Taylor's WAFL stats prior to being drafted at age 21, Harry is 195cm:

546 kicks and 159 handballs in 49 games at an average of 14 per game, 229 marks at an average of 4.6 per game but Harry played forward a bit and scored 30 goals 19 points and played in ruck a bit.

A comparison may also be made with Stratton of Hawthorn who I saw at WAFL level and was also similar.

Who could he go to - any team needing a tallish backman like perhaps Carlton.

Blee is an interesting one. Whilst he has proved to be a more than handy WAFL player I am not sure that he will make the transition to the next level.

At 192 cm he wont be able to play on the AFL monster forwards. He does have good closing speed and that may be of interest to the recruiters.

I have seen a bit of him in the WAFL and he is a third tall type at best.

In a weak draft he may attract some interest late in the draft or a rookie list spot.

Good footballer, watched him play a fair bit of juniors and was always a standout, went missing for a year or 2 but has really improved this year and deserves a go.

I thought the same about Stratton who is shorter than Blee but he's converted beautifully to the next level and has been able to play a key role in defence against key forwards.

Are you saying that because Blee's 192cm he's not big enough to be first or second tall defender or are you making a judgement on the way he plays?

I've seen quite a bit of Blee over the last few years and think he CAN cut it at AFL level. He has really worked hard in 2012 and was rewarded with Full Back in the WAFL Team of the Year.

I would love to see him at Essendon as a foil for Pears and the outgoing Dustin Fletcher.

Here's a recent article from The West Australian

For what its worth, his little brother is pretty decent too, just doesn't have the workrate...

From what I've seen Blee has glandular fever and is not being tested. I suspect however that those people interested in him have already been in contact with him and that the results of the draft camp testing are less important to those clubs than those who have not had a great interest in him.

The key stat for him - which you cannot get easily off the WAFL website- is the spoils. I am reminded of when Gibson got 20 odd spoils and everyone was all over him.
