But we have to be realistic - we won't be able to match every offer he gets.

yeah i know but in sick and tired of listening to people talking about money when its the media talking about it. there like always 75% wrong so im not worring about it til the time comes and he goes and then i will worry about it then, if nathan brown goes to another club

Agreed - refer the thread about the 20 or so players coming off contract.

Odds are Brown will probably leave, attracted by a much better offer.

Get over it.

I hope the club realises this, rather than getting into a "oops he's going" last minute crap as per Penny last season.

Real question is how to turn this to our maximum advantage.

Luckily Croft will still be here for the girls.

I think this is very good from Terry

Time to act with doggedness
14 May 2003 Herald Sun
By MARK STEVENS

FORMER Western Bulldogs coach Terry Wallace has urged the club to play hard ball with its string of stars coming out of contract.

Wallace said last night the cash-strapped Dogs had to be brave enough to consider major trades if player agents held a gun to their head.

He said the club had to live by the motto: "If you don't want to be part of it, walk out the door, and we'll get something in return."

Luke Darcy, Nathan Brown, Robert Murphy and Daniel Giansiracusa head a long list of Dogs coming out of contract at the end of the year.

But Wallace said the club's future did not hinge on the signatures, pointing to the regeneration of St Kilda without stars Peter Everitt and Barry Hall.

"If a tough decision must be made on one of these players because of over-demands by managers, then the club must play hard ball," Wallace said.

"They (players) are not going to walk out the door for nothing. They can get another quality player . . . the next Goddard.

"They can do something if they're brave enough. It takes enormous courage."

Wallace said a tough stance would set an example throughout the playing group.

"It says to other players that the club doesn't allow anyone to hold a gun to their head," Wallace said.

"It's all about saying 'we're here with a vision and heading in the right direction; unless you want to come along for the ride, we'll live without you'."

Wallace said the club also had to be careful not to throw too much of the available money at the big four.

"If they let those four players just take the whole pie, it hurts your ability to pay others," he said. "There's not enough to go out and get quality back-up.

"That's not having a go at those four players. Those players deserve to earn quality money. They're quality footballers."

Wallace said the unsigned stars would still be handsomely rewarded if they remained at the Bulldogs.

He said it just came down to degrees of dollars -- and emotion -- just as it did with Chris Grant when he re-signed at the end of 1996, despite a massive offer from Port Adelaide.

"I don't think Chris Grant's lost a lot out of being loyal and playing at a club that isn't as well off financially as some of the other clubs," Wallace said.

"It may have opened up other doors and other opportunities. That's what some young people don't understand . . . a strong emotional decision may open up doors they never thought were there."

"These four players must decide whether they want to follow in the footsteps of Chris Grant and commit themselves to the club, thus leading the revival."

Wallace said Bulldogs supporters had to be just as brave and keep the faith.

"Some of the greatest players in the competition have left their club," he said.

"Gary Ablett left Hawthorn, Tony Lockett left St Kilda and the club didn't just fall over and die.

"You've got to get that across to your supporter base.

"You can imagine the supporters saying 'If Brown goes and Darcy goes and our two young stars Giansiracusa and Murphy go, you might as well shut the door.

"That's not actually right. Supporters have to be brave. Back your club in to do what's right."

He praised Saints coach Grant Thomas for his attitude on Hall (traded to Sydney) and Everitt (to Hawthorn).

"In recent times, St Kilda has shown that a club can flourish even when top-liners leave the nest," Wallace said.

"It can work as long as the club is sharp with trading procedures.

"I believe Grant Thomas in a lot of ways has been a soft target.

"He made a couple of hard calls. His vision was to take some short-term pain for long-term gain."

Scray and Stefoid.

I can tell you are male. Not many males like Browny, they think he is a pretty boy.

He's bloody fantastic and you are showing why you are not the people in charge of trading players. I think they know he is bloody fantastic, and if so many other clubs want him he must be pretty good.

We need pretty good players.

Yes I am a male
No I don't want Browny to go
No I don't think he is worth 500K a year.
Yes Browny is a star and one of our most important players.
Yes I still believe Murphy is a better player. Just My opinion.

Agree with all of this, and hope Wallace gets the coaching job @ the Hawks and does another "Eagleton" and trades Thompson or Rawlings for Brown.

How would that be doing another 'Eagleton'???? Do you really think we would be that much better off with Thompson or Rawlings than we would be with Browny? If we got both of them for Brown maybe that would be an 'Eagleton' like trade!!

PS i really hope Browny stays.

Agree Dry Rot, Nathan Thompson would be a sensational swap for Brown. We could throw in Eagleton for a 4th round draft pick.
I don't want Brown to go but in this case I agree with Wallace and the club should make sure they offer a fair market price to him but be responsible and leave some room for others that come out of contract.
If teams like Essendon, Collingwood and Hawthorn are going to get into his ear and tell him he is worth more than what he is getting now then they better be ready to give up a star player.
For example:

HAWTHORN : Nathan Thompson
ESSENDON : Dean Solomon
COLLINGWOOD : Chris Tarrant

These trades are unlikely but the club has to play hardball and maybe we can pick up a KPP which we desperately need.

*cough* Dean Solomon? You're kidding, right? Maybe Dean Solomon and Danny Jacobs.

Yes.

My argument is simple: I'm not claiming one player (say Thompson) is better than Brown, rather whether the Dogs are a stronger TEAM with Brown, or without Brown and with say Thompson.

I reckon the latter.

Walsh, Minson, Skipper etc won't really be making a serious impact before 2005 or 2006 - we need another gun KPP well before that.

Just examples off the top of my head Jim, the specific value of Brown will be decided by Clayton,Rohde,Newport etc. and then they can start negotiating.
My preference would be Nathan Thompson anyway and with Spider,Loats and Campbell at Hawthorn and their deficiencies in the middle they could be tempted to part with a tall.

It's a strong argument but lets face it there is not many teams that will trade a KPP like Thompson for a midfielder even a gun like Brown unless they have some potential KPP that they can bring in quickly and that they believe that a player like Brown can make them a genuine contender.
