Just repeated in the changes for next week my view that I think Jack Anthony's future is back in defence. For mine he does not play as a Key forward but could play as a key Back. Dawes's development has not helped either.

This brings me to Nathan Brown. Still listed as 1-2 weeks away from a return from shoulder injury but wondering if we should slot him at CHF in the VFL side when he returns and see how he goes. We can play JA, Keeffe, Carter and K Pendlebury back so we have enough options to have a look at this.

I also would not mind seeing him have a bit of a run in the ruck Leigh Brown style and see how he goes.

We know he can play Key Back..... I would not mind seeing how he goes forward and in the middle just to see if we have some more options in the future.

Thoughts?

would he play forward in the ones with cloke and dawes in the team? If the answer is "No" then mine would be "no"

You'd have to think the answer to that is No although we have seen Cloke, Dawes and Leigh Brown in the same forward line this year.

My line of thinking is more along the lines of next week. Cloke looks like he is going to be rubbed out and we are looking at Fraser replacing him or Leigh Brown going forward. Long term these options are not the answer.

As stated in the OP, I do not see JA as a forward either and it appears Rusling is done and dusted. I see the chance to see how Nathan goes up forward for the rest of the year so that we can assess our list. I am really impressed with the development of Dawes this season and it appears he will be a long term forward for us but I'm not sure it is a certainty yet.

If N Brown is not up to it then we know for sure we have to go key forward in the draft this year.

Nathan Brown is a defender, and always will be.

He was just hitting some very good VFL form before he got injured, so he will not be tried up forward in the VFL.

We have plenty of forward options, Cloke will return, Anthony may not, Fraser, Meds, Rounds, Dick and Davis are all options.

I don't see the need to "ruin" a promising young defender in Brown by putting him up forward.

Brown is Presti's long term replacement, we all know that, so leave him down back.

ruin might be a strong word for it. I was just wondering if he has any more strings to his bow.

I have no contacts from within the club. If it has been decided that Presti will retire at the end of the year then Brwony should play Full Back for the rest of the year. If Presti does decide to go on again next year we maybe need to look at other ways to use Brown in the meantime or risk him wasting away in the VFL and potentially becoming restless.

Yes, Anthony can't play as a key forward - he only kicked 50 goals as a 21 year old last year playing FF....

seriously, people jump off blokes so quick here it is hard to keep up

Yeah "ruin" was strong, but I believe we have more options up forward then back, so I just don't see the need for Brown to play forward.

I may be wrong though, I believe he kicked 2-3 goals on debut at senior level.

I didnt like how he was playing a "Presti" type role in the seniors when he first came into the side... He wasn't given enough opportunities to develop his footy. So I actually thought it was good for his long term career to see him dropped to the VFL where he could play a more creatjve style game. I think he needs to continue that for the rest of this season and he might be ready to take over from Presti next season.

I have actually never been on JA being a key forward so can not really jump off.

yes he did kick 50 goals last year playing full forward but in my opinion he does not play as a key forward like a Cloke or Dawes does. He plays the leading forward quite well but does not have the ground level play to play as a 3rd leading forward at this stage. If he could develop that side of his play more than he does stand a chance but if it comes down to a choice of Anthony or Dawes to play FF it would be Dawes for me.

I'm probably on the wrong track with Brown as well. I just thought there may be an opportunity to trial both JA and Brown at different ends in the VFL and see what options we do have.

Jack Attack isn't at full fitness. You can tell because of his significant form dip against last year where he played terrific football and had a 50 goal season.

Right now because I project Reid more as a back flanker I do see this as entirely possible that Jack can be moved back into defence.

Right now I'd play him in the 2nds and run him into form until he shows he can consistantly put it together. Can play roles forward or back depending on the opposition and be given opportunities in both roles to develop his game at both ends.

Realistically I don't see him back in the side with a perminant position this season because his form isn't close to warranting it. Right now he is depth and he can stay that way and he can have a big preseason to hopefully get the conditioning back and play a more regular role again in 2011. Possibly as a dual position player up forward and down back as a KPU (Key position utility) if you like.
