The status of Nathan Gordon is one of the great current mysteries of the Swans' list.

He was a scholarship holder last year and as such, qualifies to be nominated as a rookie. What is more, scholarship rookies count outside the normal quota for their first year on the list. So he represents a "free pick" for the Swans.

And yet the deadline has passed for him to be nominated as a scholarship rookie.

So either

a) he is not yet old enough to be rookied (the Rams website shows his age as being March 1990 - which means he is old enough); or

b) there is some footnote in the AFL listing rules that says Swans' scholarship rookies count towards the quota of 3 additional local rookies, so he isn't really a free pick; or

c) the Swans have decided they don't want the largest rookie list ever and don't want to list him as an extra rookie even if they're allowed to; or

d) they are still making up their mind about him (which seems a bit odd - what more are they going to find out in the next couple of weeks that they won't have already found out?)

e) they have no intention of rookie-ing him (again odd since he is clearly training with them); or

f) the Swans forgot to lodge the paperwork; or

g) some other obscure reason

was granted permission off the AFL to be a 19 yr old scholarship player

So a combination of my suggestions e) and g).

It's actually quite a sneaky way of effectively giving him up to two years on the rookie list (albeit with absolutely no chance of senior footy in his first) without actually taking up a spot on the normal quota list. Means he can play all season with the reserves team, which he would be doing anyway. And an added benefit is that presumably he won't count towards the quota of listed players that the ACTAFL puts on the reserves team. So he can play every week without having to have rostered "rest weeks" or turning out for Tuggeranong. Very sneaky.

Yeah and whats happening with Ryan Bottin-Noonan? At 193cm he could be a handy KPP. How old is he?

That's interesting, given that by all reports he's an able forward, and we'd want to be snapping up that kind of player considering likely retirements in the next few years.

RBN is eligible to be drafted in 2009. He played quite a few games with the ressies this year and showed signs of being handy without doing anything much to make one drool. Can take a mark and kicks it well enough though.
He's a bit skinny at the moment, all arms and legs. Will be interesting to see how he comes on next year, and watch him compared to Lewis Johnston given they're a similar shape and size and not that different age-wise.

I will quote our coach
You don't want to take kids or rookies just for the sake of it, you've got to be pretty sure they are going to play AFL Football as it is very expensive exersise, otherwise you tend to waste money.
There seems an obsession on this board with rookies, as he also says if you have 15 on your list they are not going to play.

I hope all our players have arms and legs lol

This is becoming very annoying, i totally agree with you.

Should we just get married, and get it over with ?
