Our off-season is becoming a little trickier than it seemed to be. You'd say Minch has definitely earned another contract and Wright's inspirational run and toughness is something I'd like to keep at the club. Then there's Delaney who has showed us the value of having a gorilla defender on the list as backup (would not have liked to see Gilbert/Roberton up against Casboult and Hawkins). Some still rate Murdoch (I don't think he'll ever find enough of the footy to make it) and many want both Dempster and Fisher to stay. Lee is another tough one although Richo doesn't seem to have much love for him. Making way for 3-4 draft picks and a traded in player or two is becoming a little harder. Shenton and Curren are obvious outs, but it wouldn't surprise me to see all of Delaney, Wright and Murdoch still at the club next year, though possibly with one or two of them on the rookie list.

Dempster, Fisher, Shenton, Curren Out 4 new recruits in. Wouldve thought its pretty straight forward this off season

Would rather get rid of Lee than Dempster myself, especially if we could get pick upgrade in return for him.

i hear ya, but would love to see lee play a block of games as a 3rd tall. Dempster would prevent that and i think its best they bow out with something left in the tank.

Shenton is basically gone as is Curren. Then if Fisher retires I think one of Lee or Delaney go. Probably Lee and I would think the next in line is Wright. I still think he probably goes. 5 players seems about right. Then obviously Saunders goes from the rookie list and maybe Payne. Holmes stays if we trade Longer but goes otherwise.

We can't give him a contract based on one game.
I hope both Murdoch and Wright get a chance to show what they have by the end of the season.
They were both drafted in 2012, a year before Billings, Acres, Dunstan .
2 years before Paddy, Goddard, McKenzie, Lonie, Sinclair
The fact that they are not clearly ahead of these others at the selection table is an indicator that time is NOT on their side.
Out of players who may not get to 50 games we have:
Delaney : 27YO 35 games with the Saints ( 61 total ).
Shenton : 25YO 24 games
Lee : 25 YO 16 games
Curren : 23Yo 25 games
Minchington 22yo 17 games
Murdoch 22yo , 22 games
Wright 22yo , 22 games
________________________________
Pierce 21YO 1 game
Freeman 21YO
Sinclair 21YO 26 games
Acres: 20YO , 17 games
McKenzie 20YO 10 games
Templeton 20YO 14 games
Coghlan 19YO
Goddard 19YO 9 games
Lonie 19YO 25 games
O Kearney 19YO
Rice 19YO
White 19YO

I'd consider that everyone above the line is in the firing line, with Minchington probably doing the most to keep himself on the list.
Delaney may be lucky with Goddard injured and the possibility of Fisher retiring, depending on the coaches confidence in Coghlan by end of year..
I think Lee has some ability that could be useful, but i'm concerned about his durability. Every time we need him he goes down.
Shenton and Curren X

The future of Murdoch and Wright may depend on how well the other young guys develop.
If they don't end up getting a game ahead of O Kearney, Rice and White. What's the point.

Murdoch really doesn't seem to be getting anywhere.
Wright in the forward line may be an interesting experiment but he needs to do it again.
Defensive forward is sort of a "meh" role ,( Harmichael anyone?) but if he can do it and kick goals that's not a bad thing.

I think Wright as a defensive forward is just keeping guys like Sinclair and Lonie honest. He played a good game but if he's keeping those two out long term then we've got issues.

Agree. Love his attack on the footy and the man, but he hasn't got much else going for him - poor disposal and I don't think he's a natural goalkicker.

He was gone for all money at the end of the year, last week's performance might just have bumped him up to being kept but on the rookie list in Saunders' spot. I expect him to play 1-2 more games for the year and have sub-10 possessions in each, which will make it pretty clear where he stands.

I can't remember a year when its been so hard to choose the unfortunate few at the end.
The club will have a requirement for talls both forward back and ruck.
This may be enough to keep Delaney or Lee or both on the list, even if its for backup.
Players like Wright and Murdoch will need to be evaluated based on their potential compared to the potential even in the rookie draft.
Its also possible that they may decide to rookie someone like Delaney ( with a tattoo that says, in case of emergency ).

I actually think Delaney would be hard to rookie. In order to drop someone down to the rookie list, you need to delist them and have them nominate for a draft, where you intend to pick them up late. A lot of teams are looking for key backs, especially depth guys, so I'd say there's a 75% chance that someone picks him up late in the main draft or early in the rookie draft, which means we'd lose him. Someone like Wright, on the other hand, is practically guaranteed to be still there at our last rookie draft pick.

Yeah it used to be safe, but i think the Cats snatched Delaney's brother Cam away from North didn't they?
North supporter playing for North, they wanted to pick him up in the Rookie draft and the Cats took him one pick before North.
What sort of flog team does that , and how the hell do they stop him from being pissed off.?

According to "Scoop" Mc Clure on 3AW just now, Nathan has a crack in his scapula, happened in the second quarter I think.

Apparently Richo played vision of his attack on the ball after this happened to the team as an example ( and inspiration I'd guess) about what their trademark is all about.

He could be out for 3-5 weeks. Poor kid, so unlucky with injuries. Pretty sure he's earned himself a new contract. He does have the " Wright Stuff" like the cheer squad banner says.

If we retire both Fisher and Dempster we would have to either draft or trade in another defender
Err how so? We just beat the top side without both of them and we have Carlisle (an absolute massive gun) coming back and then Goddard on the list as well.

Carlisle + Roberton + Delaney + Goddard, Lee, Coughlan is plenty. Only 2 or 3 of these 6 can play every week.

As great as they have been I see no point for Fisher and Dempster to play on in 2017.

See where your coming from and it's probably a fair case.
Just not quite sure about the long term degree of Delaney and Lee, they were looking unlikely to last the year out a month ago.

I know it's only been 2 games but it does make you wonder if we are underrating our back up defenders or perhaps overrating our aging players who were stars once upon a time.

It could end up being like how Maxxy was let go back in 09, as a team we moved on. (I didn't however and was pretty upset max didn't make it back in, just goes to show how unpopular a decision could be)

Wright should get another year IMO. I'd love to see him string 10 games together because I just get the feeling he's a confidence player and would really blossom with faith shown by the coaches. Those scraping goals under pressure really got us into the game on Saturday and for mine it was just a small sample size of what's possible with him. Yes his kicking is crap coming out of the back line but I don't think that's his position.

Really feel for him. Opposition running defenders would feel pretty nervous if they know they'll get Nath or Mav each week.
