Bullets dethrone Kings
Friday, October 22, 2004 - 10:51 PM
Dave Donaghy, Sportal

Brisbane has snapped a four-game losing streak and gained sweet revenge for last season's crushing semi-final exit with a hard-fought 111-105 win over reigning champions Sydney at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Friday night.

A powerful second quarter effort by the Bullets destroyed any hopes the Kings had of continuing their recent dominance with the home side outscoring the visitors 41-17 during the term.

After establishing a 24-point lead with just one period remaining, it looked like it would be an easy night at the office for Brisbane before Kings pair Jason Smith and Luke Kendall led a fourth quarter revival.

Sydney managed to get to within four points of the Bullets but ran out of the time, much to the relief of the parochial home crowd.

Despite the celebrations, the win came at a price for Brisbane with star import Kevin Freeman suffering a groin injury midway through the second quarter.

The enigmatic swingman didn't take any further part in the game and looks unlikely to back up against Townsville on Sunday night.

Brisbane's brilliant backcourt duo of Stephen Black and Derek Rucker combined for 53 points but it was import Bobby Brannen who provided the cornerstone of the Bullets' first home win of the season.

Brannen scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to counter the Sydney big men who were threatening early.

Smith and import Mark Sanford led the Kings with 23 points apiece while Kendall added 18 points and six assists.

The game was just 35 seconds old when Kings coach Brian Goorjian decided he didn't like what he was seeing and called the first time out of the game.

Whatever Goorjian said, it didn't have much effect as the Bullets rattled off the first eight points of the term.

Brisbane then managed to escape to a 19-11 break before Sydney fought back hard and finished the first quarter 22-21 ahead.

Freeman's high-flying acrobatics early in the second term set the standard for the rest of the quarter as the Bullets showcased all the skills that went missing for the opening five games of the season.

The former University of Connecticut star scored nine of Brisbane's first 13 points of the quarter as the home side stretched its lead to 12 midway through the period.

The Kings clawed back to within seven points before successive three pointers to Brisbane sixth man Mick Hill with 3.45 left on the clock saw off the visitors' challenge.

Two gigantic triples to Black saw out the opening half with the Bullets holding a commanding 62-38 advantage.

Brisbane refused to ease up in the third quarter and blew the lead out to 28 points behind Black's outside shooting.

The Bullets looked set for a comfortable win after taking a 94-70 lead into the final term before Smith and Kendall staged the Kings' fightback.

Both sides face a quick turnaround with Brisbane embarking on a road trip to Townsville and the Kings facing off against Hunter on Sunday night.
