Don't scroll down untill you're done... work it out as you go along:

1) First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have dinner out (try for more than once but less than 10).

2) Multiply this number by 2.

3) Add 5.

4) Multiply it by 50... I'll wait while you get the calculator.

5) If you have already had your birthday this year add 1753. If you haven't, add 1752.

6) Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number after doing all the above steps.

The first digit of this was your original number (how many times you want to eat out each week).

The next two numbers are...

Your age (Oh yes, it is)!

Not that hard to figure out.

Say your originial number is x.

You start with x.
Multiply by 2 = 2x.
Add 5 = 2x + 5
Multiply by 50 = 50(2x + 5) = 100x + 250
Add 1752/3 = 100x + 2002/3, hence depending on whether you've had your birthday.

Subtract birth year = 100x + Your age.

Say you're original number was three and your birthday is in Janurary, 1980.

100(3) + (2003 - 1980) = 323 ie. Your original number plus your age.

Indeed, all these things are so lame for anyone who's done high school algebra.

Not if you've already had your telegram from the Queen.

(ie it fails if you are 100+)

Agree it's lame. It simply makes you spin around a few mental arithmetic loops in the hope you won't notice that all it asked you to do was subtract the year of your birth from the year of your last birthday. No surprise you're left with your age.

Now a REAL neat maths trick would be if you could subtract the year of your birth from the year of your last birthday and NOT get your age!
