Yeah, except Long fumbles and hasn't got great disposal. I'd suggest Macrae's got a higher ceiling. Long is what he is.

Long has the inside game Macrae doesn't. He tackles like a machine and can shrug tackles and feed it out.

Long has had 17 tackles in the last 2 games.

I'm not sure about the higher ceiling.

What good are high ceilings if the foundation is poor? That athletic edge Long has provides significantly greater scope for matchups. Macrae is limited to being a ball winner and whilst he’s a stud at VFL until we see it at AFL level his ceiling height looks 2400 to me…

Long has slotted in beautifully and is playing an important role.

Most of his handpasses were excellent and he dishes off more than kicks. I was no fan but boy has he made me eat my words. he might still be a liability with his lack of foot speed against sides like Hawthorn but his tackling and physicality is outstanding. He keeps his feet and even when being tackled manages to shrug the tackle and feed the pill to advantage.
 
Just needs to maximise his strengths. Stick to the inside, tackle and give handballs. Work on his handballs from congestion out to space.

The big test will be v Carlton. Do we trust him enough to send him to Cripps. We didn't last year when Cripps tore us up, despite Long being the most close physical peer to Cripps from our side.

If Long makes it, he is going to need to be making in it an inside mid, defensive type role (to play to his strengths of physical size, tackling, dishing out), and if we don't trust him against the best in the business, then I'm not sure what future he has.

Well I remember Fly describing Ned as a ‘monster’ in an interview last year so l guess ‘animal’ is similar and possibly an upgrade depending on the animal

He's now playing the half forward/mid role this pre-season. Guess kinda what de goey played last night. They want that extra position in him to provide him with more opportunties. Once he gets back from his shoulder, which is after the bye.

Probably has a higher ceiling ball in hand. Has a much lower one in a contest. Good footballer, but he's an in-betweener. Not slick enough for the outside and just doesn't have an AFL standard inside game - not particularly close either.

Agree, so far, and also Long is an energetic battler. Poor skills, really Rupert Wills. mark 2. Both would be role players.
