Excuse the distinct thread but this is pretty sweet – A few months ago, with a group of mates, got on England to win the series at $3.20 for a tidy sum. Despite us all being passionate Australians, we judged it too good to pass up those odds on a decent ENG outfit. On Friday morning, just before MJ went ballistic, we received the following glorious ludicrous email from Sportsbet

Over $400,000 Paid To Members ! Sportsbet.com.au has declared the 2010/11 Ashes Series over and has paid out all bets totaling more than $400,000 on England to not only retain the Ashes, but to win the series after Day One of the Third Test in Perth.Punters have collected their winnings with four days of play left in the Perth Test - and with the Melbourne and Sydney Tests to come.Sportsbet.com.au CEO Matthew Tripp says: "Let’s face it… England has gone from strength to strength in their punishment of the Australian Cricket Team. England has been tormenting the Aussies in the media and on the field. Aussie selectors are up sh*t creek along with the players….no-one to select, can’t bat, can’t bowl, can’t field…and no credibility to even sledge! Unfortunately for Australian cricket fans the writing is on the wall and we can’t see the Aussies coming back from here… and we thought members may want to get in some Xmas shopping, so we figured we may as well Pay You Today for any single wagers on England to Retain the Ashes and England to Win the Ashes Series.Your payout has been credited to your Sportsbet account”.

30 mins later MJ starts ripping it back in and runs through the top order and we have been going ballistic!!!!!! Always sweet to get one over the 'man', who we assume no longer works for Sportsbet! Mates heading down with a 'Thanks Matty Tripp' poster for an enormous Boxing Day at the G! Guess they have gained some customer loyalty at least!

Might have a bet on beloved Aus now. That way we can win on both horses in the two horse race :D

I bet Sportsbet wished they waited until at least close of play before making the call to release the funds. as you say, great to get one up on them though.

Im guessing the guy who needs Australia to win the series for the last leg on his 8 leg multi to collect $200K (or thereabouts) is feeling a little more optimistic about things tonight.

I'm sure Sportsbet are delighted you've decided to tell the internet about them paying out early. They'd also be grateful for any unpaid publicity you could provide them with on Boxing Day, in fornt of a huge nationwide audience. If you'd now be kind enough to use your winnings to place another bet, you'd be their perfect customer.

Congratulations on your winning bet, but trust me when I tell you this; you haven't "had one over the man". In fact, if you had a recent start date, I would have thought you are working for Sportsbet's marketing department.

In this situation, the only way you could "have one over the man" is to take your winnings, close your account and never speak of it ever again. That's why "the man" always wins.

Understand what your saying mate.

However, if Australia go on and win the series you think that is money well spent?

Well, yes of course that is fairly obvious (hence my note about customer loyalty), we have no real illusions there about the actuarial motivations of gambling agencies. But just enjoying having a laugh mate for a fun circumstance!

I dunno, Sportsbet obviously think it is. As mentioned earlier, they dipped their toe in the water by paying out Richmond for the spoon, so they have a fair idea of the outcome they can expect. I find it hard to believe they paid out early so punters can use the money for Christmas shopping!

That's cool and I don't want to sound like a party pooper. As long as you are just having fun, that's all that matters.

Fun until the money has dripped to those pricks again l guess?!! There would be nothing sweeter than being paid out handsomely for an English series win and watching us get our ****ing urn back.

l do think it is weird Aus are into favourites though ($2.50). Momentum etc sure but WACA was always going to be stiff for England. Melbourne could be huge but Sydney should suit Anderson and Swann alot more? We can't play a 4 man pace attack in Melbourne and Sydney?

Wake up Punter and Clarke....
