Multiplat Need for Speed: Payback

Less than 3 hours into the EA Access trial and the game is telling me to repeat races to earn better upgrade cards because my car cant keep up with 1st place in the current race.

Guess i wait for this one to go free on EA Access. Loot card progression system in a racer is absolutely disgusting, hope the game bombs big time.

I picked this up on Friday and mostly it's been a fun arcade racer. The card system for performance upgrades is the obvious let down but so far I haven't had any issues as far as my car level to the recommended level for the next race. The couple of times I've been low I've always had enough cash to purchase upgrade cards to get the car up to spec. The only race I've really had any trouble with was a drag event that they decided to turn into a sprint race within the city, my car was well over the recommended but apparently Dodge Chargers don't turn very well.

I still don't understand why racing games have an upgrade system that's any different to the original Gran Turismo just let us race for cash then upgrade as we can afford it.

So what is the verdict on this game?

Was going to get it, but the reviews were not very promising at all
It's certainly no game of the year contender but I'm still having fun with it. As above the upgrade system sucks ass. It doesn't really stop you from upgrading your car but when there's set bonuses for having 3 or 6 of the same brand and then cards having up to 3 random perks attached it feels like you're being cheated when you end up with jump perks on a drag car.

I've seen some people complain of rubber banding but I've found I can win comfortably if I dont make any stupid mistakes. The second you make a mistake and you lose a bit of speed they catch up fairly quickly.

Shipments have horns, neons, tyre smoke and NOS colour in them so obviously you end up with crappy horns 80% of the time. The game gives you base shipments fairly regularly throughout the game and from my experience with them anybody paying actual cash to buy them is borderline brain dead.

If you're going to buy maybe get it from EB so you can take it back if you don't like it.

So for someone like me who isnt a big car racing game type of guy who just wants a game you dont have to think about. Is it worth it?

Personally I think it is, actual driving is uncomplicated and the story is nice and cheesy. The only parts I've nearly lost my mind with are the off road races because I'm terrible so I had to put the difficulty down to easy. It may be worth checking out some gameplay on youtube
