Hey guys n gals,

I’m looking for some help/guidance with building together an outdoor sound system. My house looks to be the new party central this summer among my mates and but we lack some more sound outside near the pool. On grand final day I opened up all the windows of the house and cranked up my surround sound system, it was good but now I want more. This is my inside system and I couldn’t be happier with it considering how cheap it was (on special for $350).

I’m looking at getting four outdoor/marine speakers for my backyard but I don’t fully understand the whole ohms and watts thing about it all. I was thinking about just buying a second hand system like my indoor one /older generation one and hooking up outdoor speakers to it. Now im not sure if it would work that good because the speakers would be demanding different ohms/wattage yeah?
Something like these speakers I was thinking of buying four of and hooking it up outside.

Any help appreciated, cheers.

Depends on how much effort/money you want to put into it, in a place I used to live in we just had some crappy Logitech surround system hooked up and it did ok.... you just had to pack it up when you were done. If you're looking at getting proper outdoor speakers you'd be better off picking up an amp, they're not hard to find 2nd hand, and places like JB Hifi flog them off quite cheaply sometimes.

I have no idea what those speakers are like, it might be worth checking out Jaycar as they sell something similar and might have some set up for you to check out.

The logitech ones I have are there flagship model, truly are great for the price.

I bought 4 speakers already just waiting on them from the USA. They are Polk Atrium 4 speakers, they specialise in outdoor ones. They were $110 a pair and I bought 2 sets, with postage it came to $340... It's not bad considering one set (2) cost between $300-350 in Australia.

Just need a sub and a reciever, struggling to find a decent price 100watt reciever though... Hmm

Look 2nd hand.
For outdoors music you don't need thx, dolby 7.1 or dolby 5.1...

Watts? lol how efficient are the speakers? does the amp have any dynamic range? is that 100 watts peak or can it sustain it? what size area? what impedence are the speakers rated at? blah etc etc blah blah.

"if you compare the maximum volume of a 50-watt amplifier with a 100-watt amplifier the difference is only 3 dB, barely greater than the ability of the human ear to hear the difference. It would take an amplifier with 10 times more power (500 watts!) to be perceived as being twice as loud (a +10 dB increase). "

and JB etc have lots of amps for less than $500 that would drive that system. $500 is not an expensive amp by any stretch.
