Hi all,

Couldn't find the general questions thread so I've made my own, I'm hoping some people can help me.

I used to have a Nintendo GameBoy Colour (back in the day) but that has died on me, after many glorious decades. Also had an Advanced SP (but no idea where it is now). I'm now in the market for a new handheld and I'm very overwhelmed with the amount of information available... I've heard really conflicting things about all of them.

I would mostly just play the old-school Pokemons (fire red etc. - no problem purchasing them again if it's not compatible). I'm not sure if the new Pokemon Moon etc. would be worth it, but then I suppose that a DS would mean I cannot play it, so that's a bit limiting. I have not really looked into other games but I guess my style is still quite childish (Donkey Kong, Crash Bandicoot on PS etc. etc.) so games like that would be my style (so chuck any recommendations my way).

I don't really know if I would find the 3D function very useful, maybe someone else could give me advice on what the best value for money is. I think the 3D function will just be headache-inducing (get slight motion sickness playing Halo, I suck). I don't really care much for online gaming either, if that's an option with any.

My bad if this was too ramble-y and made no sense.

Thanks

3DS is probably still your best option. I personally don't use the 3D function as it is a bit trippy, but it doesn't take anything away from it.
You wont be able to play stuff like Fire Red on a 3DS or even a DS, as they use a different cartridge size.

3DS has Donkey Kong, and you can play Pokemon from Diamond and Pearl all the way up to the newest ones on 3DS. X and Y are really good.

A basic 3DS seems the way to go. Don't have to pay more for the newer model or the larger one, but it plays the same games and it is the least limiting in terms of what you'd want to play. You never know, you might see some newer games one day you'd like, but can't play if you have something older.

This information is all just off memory, so I hold no responsibility if any of it is wrong :p

3ds XL is fantastic and you can download older games to play on there aswell. Titles like A Link Between Worlds, Omega Ruby, Smash Bros and Fire Emblem are personal favourites. I'm into very similar games to you mate so I would recommend the 3ds for sure!

Thanks! What made you decide between the normal and the bigger screen? I worry the bigger screen may be a bit motion sickness inducing like Halo...

I've done a quick google search online for the 3DS... is it the NEW 3DS? Or will I have to pick one of the original 3DS up 2nd hand (which I dislike doing, would rather buy it new)? It seems that major retailers JB etc. don't stock the old 3DS... Should I be going for the new or the original in your opinion?

I don't play with the 3D going it's a choice to use it, I like the bigger screen because it just makes the game feel bigger. It's hard to explain but if you tried out both you would understand haha

The new one loads a lot quicker in general so would recommend that.

The new is definitely better, and if you don't like buying second hand is probably a lot easier to get your hands on.

Another option is the 2DS. Obviously no 3D function, and it's reasonably priced.

I did consider the 2DS - but it's a little comical looking so I decided against it (no offence to 2DS owners).

I just went on Nintendo and saw that they had this
http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/pokemon-red-version-3ds

I'm guessing from the '3DS' that this is compatible for the 'New' Nintendo 3DS?

Your first post said I couldn't play Fire Red so I just presumed it can't play anything with old cartridges and their were no replacements thus no old school Pokemon games for me (but I probably misunderstood your post).

EDIT: For some reason, when I change the region to Australia I can't find it, but it's a digital download... surely they did not decide to only make it available to the US.

EDIT EDIT: When on earth will they be made available to Australians!?! Google says Feb 2016 but I just looked online and... no dice.

Wait are you looking for the 3ds or the game? The game is only available if you have a 3ds and you download it from the 3ds shop

The 2DS is pretty gross looking, yeah :p

That Red is definitely out. Plenty of people on here played it. Fire Red is the remake of Red, which that one is. Red you should be able to get on the store, but you need the 3DS first.

Sorry I am looking for the 3DS console... but my purchase is very contingent on my ability to play the old school Pokemons (even if I have to repurchase them).

Ah okay, so it must be a purchase option that I can only see if I had the console... do you or Igloo have a 3DS and want to do a quick Pokemon search and tell me which of the old schools I can purchase now? :D (for some reason I cannot view it without a 3DS, even to browse and I am not at all bothered if I can only get the really new ones.)

You can buy Red, Blue and Yellow all on the Nintendo store from the 3DS. $13 each.

Yep just as Igloo said above the originals are available and I believe gold and silver will come to it eventually. I have yellow on there and just did a Nuzlocke on it on YouTube haha. As much as I loved the old games the newer ones are much easier to play by today's standards

Thank you & don patch sword for your help! New Nintendo 3DS here I come... be patient my sweet Charmander.

Chiming in a bit late here but I'll add the New 3DS uses updated 3D technology where it tracks your eyes so you don't lose the 3D effect when you move the 3DS or your head. Much more comfortable to use. The old 3DS would lose the 3D if you moved it sometimes and you'd have to wait for your eyes to adjust again.

Anyway, enjoy it!

Igloo is Heart Gold and Soul Silver available?

It has that old school Gameboy Colour feel. With the NX coming out soon, 2DS might be a cheaper option.

Since they released the Red/Blue/Yellow, they would be stupid not to release the rest of the Pokemon games on their store. However Nintendo is often extremely backward.
