Wikipedia

Neil Hein (born 7 June 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Hein played in a premiership for Norwood in 1984 and would appear in a total of 140 SANFL game with the club during the 1980s. It was from there that he was signed by Brisbane, who secured his services by using a pre-draft selection prior to the 1987 season.

He had the distinction of playing in Brisbane's first ever VFL game, against North Melbourne, which they won by 33 points. From his four disposals he kicked two goals to be one of six multiple goal-kickers for the Bears. A ruckman, he wouldn't always play in his preferred position due to the presence of Mark Mickan in 1987 and spent a lot of time up forward during his eight appearances that season. He played seven further games in 1988, some of them as first ruckman.

The Brisbane Bears may have been a team of cast-offs that would one day be known as 'the Bad News Bears', but for one glorious night they were the toast of the football world. Nobody expected a team of rejects to be competitive when they lined up for their first game against North Melbourne at the MCG in 1987. After all a side with the likes of Brenton Phillips, Neil Hein and Bernie Harris didn't read too well on paper, but not only were the Bears competitive, they managed to upset a relatively strong North Melbourne outfit that would go on and make the finals that year.

Until the Bears put David O'Keeffe at full-forward at half time in place of Neil Hein, their only true winner in front of goals was Mark Williams.
