I haven't seen spicks and specks but i'm pretty sure its a rip off of this show, which pisses me off because i'd much rather watch 'never mind the buzzcocks'.

Simon Amstell is probably one of the sharpest presenters around whereas Adam Hill is a complete waste of space, i've seen some of his standup about 'aussie accents' and it's as embarassing as women comics who do stand up about gender differences...

Anyway here is an episode of never mind the buzzcocks, give it a go it you are interested. :thumbsu:

I think Australia should stop ripping off shows and buy the original. The argument against this would be 'but we should be giving aussie talent a go, I agree but until we find it lets stick to the funnier programs rather than the shit we're dished up with.

I'm not saying there are no funny aussies, on the contrary there are, ie. tony martin but what's he doing now? who knows, since his show on triple m (highest rating radio show) was canned to make room in the budget for peter and miffy (or whatever their names are), no-ones heard much from him... Who are the people in charge of budgets and programing for Australia tv and radio? They're doing a ****ing shit job. :thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd:

I haven't seen much of Buzzcocks tbh, but I get the impression that Spicks n Specks is a less edgier version? Spicks is okay, but you can't watch too much of it, it's all the same after a while, I can't remember laughing at the show in the last couple of years.

You have a point, i think. The Australian Top Gear is just horrible, unwatchable. Not a patch of the British original. I'd rather watch nothing than watch Australian Top Gear.

And I agree that Australian TV/radio is pretty ****ed up as to what it chooses to air/doesn't. Something is seriously wrong when Rebel Wilson/Rove constantly get on prime time TV.

At least Micallef is on tonight :thumbsu:

I think it a shame we're rewarding non entities like rove and adam hill with hosting roles on inferior copies from america and the uk. I would rather watch the original version because they’re better. Why should we accept inferior TV? Why are we paying these idiots mega bucks when they lack any originality and get their laughs by ripping off jokes from the overseas show they’ve already stolen the premise from?

If we had zero ability in the entertainment business I’d be more willing to accept this but we do have the capacity to make funny tv. Australia has produced some great films and great comedy shows like Dgen and Frontline. I strongly believe more emphasis needs to be put on developing our own original ideas for TV and less on mimicking tv shows and personalities from OS.

What do you think?

True :thumbsu:

It just seems as though Australain TV isn't really willing to try anything that might be a bit risky, and goes for something that is safe, adn as a result it all gets a bit boring (not just in comedy either) and isn't that interesting.

It's interesting to note that the 2 biggest Australain comedies of recent times (Summer Heights, Chaser) were original concepts. And even though I'm not the biggest fan of either of those shows, they're a damn sight more interesting than Spicks n Specks, or generic skit shows (wedge, comedy inc).

Hollowmen is also great, and I am a fan of Double the Fist (although, admittedly, I've only seen it when I'm drunk, so...), and Newstopia is great, so the talent is definately there, as you say :thumbsu:

They're aimed at different audiences. I love both equally because they do what they're intended to do very well. Broader appeal doesn't automatically mean inferior.

Broader appeal, BULLSHIT!!! I wanna speak to the person who likes the aussie top gear equally to the british one, infact i want to smack him over the head. There is no way they're on the same par.

Also if you're saying adam hill does the job as good as simon amstell then i'm afraid you have nfi. What is this bullshit "they do what they're intended to do very well" - what a load bollocks. One uses original material to entertain the other flat out copies the original and does a pathetic job. Rove copies conan etc, it's absolutely pathetic that these idiots have the jobs they have, firstly they have annoying personalities and secondly they lack anything resembling talent.

i didn't like summer heights or chaser either but that is very interesting they've been our 2 biggest comedies over the past few years. I must admit i really like the chaser boys first show CNNNN :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

While we're talking about imitations, I haven't seen the BBC show that Good News Week was originally based on, so can't compare the two, but the original GNW (in its ABC days) surely would have been the equal of the BBC version at least, as Paul McDermott was a fantastic host. Certainly better than Spicks and Specks (which I don't mind), the original GNW was a lot edgier on the ABC.

It's called Have I Got News For You? Here's one of my favourite parts with everyone's favourite loudmouth Brian Blessed as a guest host:

While we're on British quiz shows, my favourite one is QI, hosted by Stephen Fry.
