Congratulations to our former AFLW assistant, VFLW head coach Chloe McMillan, who is now working as a development coach for the men’s team …

“Launched earlier this year, WCAP aims to fast-track the development of women in coaching and assist in their progression into senior coaching roles across both AFL and AFLW programs.

Under the program, McMillan serve as a full-time development coach in Collingwood’s AFL program where she will work closely with the club’s AFL senior coach, Craig McRae under a formal mentorship.

She will have direct access to elite AFL coaching settings including match-day coaching box, game planning sessions and match committee meetings to support her development.”

Does this mean Chloe will stop coaching our VFLW girls?

Not sure, but I’m guessing so …

… just going by the “full time” description of her new role.

I thought Josh Fraser had the development role?
Edit: He is head of the academy, so similar role.

Let’s hope she rises to the same heights as Alan Richardson and Craig McCrae and assume this is more than an opportunity to place part of her wage outside the soft cap under positive discrimination rules.

This is one that will fly under the radar in general football land, but is a great story!

There’s been talk about the FD soft cap lately with Hardwick putting it on the agenda (I wonder why no one called him out on just taking a pay cut 🤔) and I feel like here’s an opportunity for positive growth. Perhaps if all female roles within the male FD were outside the salary cap, rather than the head coach, we might kill two birds with one stone by giving senior coaches further resources and bringing more female talent into the system!

Edit: The Phantom I didn’t realise those exceptions were already in place?

I reckon this is fantastic for a number of reasons …

- I was saddened when our GOAT VFLW Coach Penny Cula Reid left the club. You never know what goes on within the four walls of the club, but it was disappointing that our club couldn’t find a role for her given her track record. Good to see that now changing.

- This is not something that all 18 clubs are doing through AFL mandate. It’s good to see our club is one of the front runners. This is as good an indication of a strong positive internal culture as you’d see. Yeah, we’ve always done this kind of thing for players, but they’re a bit of a protected species. Good to see this happening in other areas of the club.

- I don’t know how the program works …

… but if the AFL have structured this aI that “Rich Clubs can have a free hit by bringing in people from non-traditional pathways to give them opportunities for development that they wouldn’t ordinarily have” then IMO that’s an awesome idea. I know some people get upset about “affirmative action” or “positive discrimination” but sometimes it’s needed to bring about cultural change. And it provides a way for rich clubs like ours to be creative, give back, and maybe even get a little value from our wealth.

* soft cap

I feel like I’m missing something here that may have been in the article which I haven’t read? Soft cap (or luxury cap overseas) only refers to a clubs ability to overspend, but incur “taxes” when that happens. I’d rather this be excempt from the FD spend like the $80k (I think) toward rookies. Not being mischievous or anything here because I genuinely feel I’m missing something here based on the language used.

Appears we are one of 9 clubs accessing the program.

The program will be co-funded by the respective Club, together with the AFL, with relevant Soft Cap exemptions in place during the two-year period.

Thanks for the clarification! With the threat of laziness hanging over my head I’m glad someone was able to step in to help me out…

FWIW this is different to what I was speculating on which was more a blanket approach toward all roles within FD’s, but a step in the right direction nonetheless and a fantastic opportunity for McMillan.

Might be worth your while finding yourself a development coach to upskill you on Googling?

Yeah Scodog10
I’m sketchy on the exact details, but I seem to remember that up to the first $50k of a female’s coaching salary sits beyond the soft cap.
So she could be on a $100k salary at 50% FTE and effectively be a bonus employee.

As an aside; I really dislike positive discrimination. If I was her, I’d want to know I was the best person for the job, not the best female.
And I want my club finding inclusiveness through genuine means, not bias incentives. Genuine action means so much more.

This isn’t anything like positive discrimination. There wouldn’t be this position without the scheme. The AFL made an offer to clubs to nominate a female for such a position which reads just as much like a coaching scholarship/traineeship than an actual extra footy dept coaching slot.

The afl could have created an incentive just for a new coach or a junior coach or had a broad multi faceted criteria.
It has one.
I think that makes it a kind of positive discrimination.

Regardless, I prefer to hire the best human for the job and hope that society delivers an inclusive outcome.
It’s a better way. It’s a genuine mind shift.

We've tried that. Might eventually work but too slowly. Bloody hard to determine who the best person is and thus it regularly comes down to biases - need to throw in some weighting to level the biases.

The scheme is simply seeking to give a small group of female coaches an accelerated development opportunity.

Don’t overthink it.

You’re correct on both counts.
It shouldn’t be overthought; but it appears we both have.

And, as you point out, it is designed to benefit a small group of people .
It is very definitely positive discrimination.

I think my fiancée might suggest a bandwidth coach to help deal with my house reno and 5 week old son while I peruse BigFooty and Google stuff that others can just as easily find if asked?.. Context is always king I suppose from both perspectives 👍

As an FYI I come down on the same side as Sidey on this re the positive discrimination because promoting female talent pathways for the game is a fantastic move (perhaps similar programs could be extended to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples if it hasn’t already). It’s quotas I struggle with.

I see benefits to this sort of approach from a human development perspective…will help break down the toxic cultures that can build up in football clubs.

On the other hand I hope this is an appointment based on competence. Not sure what the remit is exactly, but if it’s about football development. She better know what she’s doing.
