New ING Cup Rules

The 2003-04 ING Cup, which begins on 24 October with a day-night fixture between the Warriors and the Redbacks in Perth, sees three new innovative playing conditions included for this season:


Extra Bonus Point – an extra bonus point will be awarded to a team who doubles the run rate of its opposition;


Free Hit – a free hit will be awarded to a batsman following a foot-fault no-ball. The free hit will be the next delivery to whichever batsman is facing. The striker can only be dismissed in the same circumstances that apply for a no-ball. The free hit must be a legitimate delivery (a wide or no-ball does not count);


11 players per team – the number of players in each team will change back from 12 to 11 players per side.

weird. i can't believe that the only two teams that do not host an ING d/n are Tas and Vic. Tas fair enough (they have lights at Bellerive?), but I wouldn't mind seeing the boys (Vic) under lights just once. is it just too expensive to flick the switch at the G? they could play at Princes Park or Lakeside Oval. That would be more attractive than the G.

I know that ODI's are a bit of a rort designed to help out batsmen express their frustrations and all, but would it be too much to ask to have a rule that helps a bowler out for once?

Why? It's not bowlers v batsmen, it's one team v another team.

As long as the rule affects both teams equally, it shouldn't matter.

The one rule I did like they got rid of in the 12 player rule. Thus allowing sides to pick an extra bowler.

Go down to the Lakeside Oval, and you'll see why not.

Are they taking the ****? Fair enough that you can't get out on a no-ball, but immunity from being dismissed on the next ball is a joke.

This was used in the TIS challenge and worked well.

Also is used in the English county one day comp.

i like the rule (and i'm normally a traditionalist).

but ever since the back foot no ball rule was changed, its impossible to change your shot upon hearing "no-ball"

you can bet that the number of no balls bowled this season will be down drastically on last season.



as long as they dont change the laws for first class cricket i'll be happy. They can screw around all they like with the one dayers, bonus points etc.

I think they shouldn't play at the G at all they should play at Punt Road or something would make it so much more interesting and fun for the family and spectators.

It cost 2 K per hour to put on the lights at the MCG.

I'd like to see them add the same thing as the Super 8's had, where if all the bastman are out, the last batsman may bat on until the overs are used up, or he gets out. There was another rule change in the Super 8's it was that all the players were allowed to bowl. But that would be going too far in the ING Cup.
