Read one of my quality rumour of the day thread, 19 year old striker from what I understand, his name is in the thread.

Rivaldo is in talks with Liverpool btw.

As Moomba said in his other thread, the kid is named Dong Fangzhuo

From Red Issue:

Fergie has confirmed that we will sign the Chinese forward
in January:

“We’re signing a Chinese boy, hopefully in the next few
weeks. But we have to be careful how much we grow and how we
cope with that growth staff-wise. Can we cope with another
couple of million wanting to support us?”

The quote is unattributed, but if it's from Fergie, then I'm a bit worried. He's talking about the merchandising and marketing aspect of the purchase, not the footballing side of it.

It won't be good for the kid if he's not a Fergie approved signing. When Mark Bosnich returned to United, it was a Fartin' Martin signing and Fergie couldn't wait to sign another 'keeper (sure, it turned out to be Taibi) and get rid of Bosnich. With RVN, Solksjaer, and Forlan, Fangzhuo could find himself rotting away in the reserves.

I hope it's a Fergie approved signing, but from that one comment, the signs aren't good.

From reading other articles, about half a dozen Chinese kids were sent to OT to spend a week at the Youth academy. With this chap, they asked to extend it to a month, so I figure they see something in him.

He hails from the club that Sun Jihai played for - Dalian i think.

Dalihan Shide...what happened to the alliance between them and Newcastle where all hot prospects would be recommended to us etc.

Blackburn had some asian cguy on trial te other week. He was pretty mediocre apparently ang got sent home.

Ignore me. GO ROVERS.

Actually United arent signing anyone. The club have said the player is not for sale and that they are willing to loan him only.

Im sure they will keep that stance when Man. U offer them the big dollars though:rolleyes:

Apparantly that the football club that Fangzhuo plays for is owned by one of the richest private corporations in China. Therefore, they don't need to sell him. It seems that they are worried that if they sell the player, he will simply be farmed out to Royal Antwerp to develop his game.

In this unusual twist, it looks like the selling club is looking after their player's best interest.

But as I said, if we take on the kid, I hope it's for footballing reasons, not marketing ones.

We're talking about ManYoo here. Do you think they'd do anything other than for marketing?

Why do you think that Tim Howard in in goals.

Because they are trying to tap into the US sports market. Fergie was seen on ESPN talking to Derek Rae the other day.

It makes you wonder why they are bothering. Most US people think that anything "furr-en" isn't worth knowing.

Many still have not heard of David Beckham. Which is probably just as well.

I think any idea that Howard is in goals purely as a marketing ploy has been destroyed by the fact that he is actually doing a decent job there, and so far has proven to be an improvement on the other two alternatives.

Gee, if United wanted to tap into the US market, they'd be signing guns like DaMarcus Beasley, Landon Donovan or Freddy Adu.

Your bitterness over '99 remains evident. Keep it up.

From Red Issue, some rumoured United targets:

CELTIC star Liam Miller is being tracked by Manchester United. The 22-year-old midfielder is out of contract in the summer and talks between Martin O'Neill and Miller's agents Finton Drury and Eamonn McLaughlin have been inconclusive.
And aware of growing interest in the player, he asked the agents in for nitty-gritty talks after Miller's outstanding display against Belgian side Anderlecht in the Champions League match at Parkhead 11 days ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson attended that game to watch Anderlecht defender Vincent Kompany but was aware also of Miller, who has burst on to the scene this season.

As we mentioned last week.

LUIS Fabiano would be a great signing for Manchester United, according to the striker's fellow Brazilian Emerson Thome.

The 22-year-old international striker, who has hit 87 goals in 114 games for Sao Paulo, is desperate for a return to the European scene after a disappointing spell in France with Rennes and Bolton defender Thome believes United should make a bid.

United are said to have held preliminary talks with the Brazilian club about the future of Fabiano.United would have an extra edge if a bidding war breaks out when the transfer window reopens in January because they have forged a close working link with Sao Paulo.

They spent last week training at United's Carrington complex during a break in the Brazilian season and won 6-3 in a friendly at Bolton on Saturday when Fabiano was absent on international duty. Thome, 31, missed the game but said:

"He is already one the best goalscorers in Brazil over the last two seasons. He’s going to grow up and I am sure he could be a very good buy. But he is only a young lad and he already has some of experience of living in Europe because he had a spell in France."
