hey guys, this time of year is always boring for afl fans as the closest thing is the NAB cup!

so anyways maybe for some entertainment we can predict how many games you think the new guys will play next year..... here are mine :)

Q.Lynch - 22-25
C.young - 22-25
J.russell - 7-8
B.Kennedy - 5-7
B.Grundy - 2-3
T.Broomhead - 0-2
B.Hudson - 0-2
K.Martin - 0-1
J.Ramsey - 0
A.Oxley - 0
Dwyer - 0
J.Frost - 0

I expect us to play 25 games next year......lol
(i have probably forgotten a recruit or two)

I think Russell may play most games. He might even take over from Harry O if he keeps sliding on form.
Depending on how he develops over the pre season....Grundy could play almost as a permanent forward. I can't see him being any worse than jack darling in his first year and that was pretty good.

Agree on Russell - I think people understimate his ability to fit into the team. I think he will be our primary attacking small defender, and take most of the kick-outs (a la Leon Davis).

(baring injuries to these players)
Lynch - 20+
Young - 20+
Russell - 20+
Hudson - 8-10
Kennedy - 3-5
Grundy - 1-3
Martin - 1-3

We really are looking to get a lot out of Lynch this year, he is going to be crucial in both his forward role and relief ruck role. How he goes is anyone's guess but, of all the experienced additions he is the one we need most out of IMHO.

Young should prove handy, his delivery into the forward fifty should be a fantastic asset but he is very outside and we need to get the ball to him.

Russell, could be a good addition but it remains to be seen if he can return to his best form. Has been off the boil for a couple of years at Scum town.

Lukey Ball and the Krak will be our finest experienced additions, going to be a major boost to have them both back.

Dywer is 6 years older than Martin, so you'd think if we need a midfielder to come in for a cameo he will most likely get a game ahead of martin. Mostly guess work atm though

Sliding form? Harry's second half of the year was very good after a slow start. He finished top 10 in the B&F if I recall correctly.

I doubt it has anything to do with age.

Well he is a stronger body, and probably fitter too, plus more experience so age has it's positives in the short term. Obviously it will come down to performance but in the off season ill back in Dywer over Martin

"Richard Tambling's going to win the Brownlow" Dwayne Russell.

Oh sorry wrong thread.

Hudson's going to play every game due to super powers gained through his Grizzly Adams-like beard.

Does he have a stronger body though? I think he is certainly fitter.

I think it is more about need - if Ball or another bang/crash midfielder goes down, then Martin would be a better chance of the two. If a running outside type mid goes down, then Dwyer would be a chance. Obviously also depends on the form of both. But I just don't think age is all that much of a determinant in this, as they are both mature enough of body to be considered.

a real lottery
someone like martin could get a game early and not look back
grundy could play early in the forward pocket and help out in a ruck triple of either Jolly or hudson with lynch and grundy backing up....
i'd say kennedy/broomhead/ramsey may all get a small taste only
I'd say dwyer will get an opportunity of some description....
lynch will play when available
hudson could play anything 5-15
russell - up to him - plays well he'll get games no doubt

You are right....Harry finished 8th which surprises me. Shaw wasn't even top 10 and Daisy 10th. We need them 2 guys finishing top 5-6 in 2013

IMO, the only reason we recruited Lynch is now null and void. Grundy can play the swing role from round 1. I don't think the recruitment team believed in their wildest dreams Grundy would slide to our pick when they traded in Lynch and got rid of Dawes. But I think Lynch will now play FF and Grundy in the pocket.

We still really made good profit on the Dawes trade considering they are really like for like if played as permanent forwards and we got Lynch for nothing but a first round pick for Dawes.

As for Russell I think he will be a regular inclusion but it would have to be a horses for courses scenario between Johnson, Russel and O'brien. Unless Maxwell of course gets dislodged from the captaincy which by all reports isn't happening. Johnson was in poor form in the latter part of the year but that was probably due to his extended time on the bench with his shoulder. I'm quite happy with the depth of our backline though now.

Toovey, Johnson, Russel, O'brien, Williams, Shaw, Maxwell can all play AFL football to a good standard. We also have to work out if we go with the 3 tall defenders in Keefe, Brown and Reid or a combination of 2..

I don't remember Russel's kicking to be an absolute highlight of his game but if it is then he may well lock himself in the starting 22 as it's something that we are missing in that group.

Russell our primary attacking defender? Is Heath Shaw dead? A bloke with rubbish disposal is going to take our kickouts and all of a sudden go from dud to gun, simply because he came to Collingwood. Now where have I heard this before..... oh that's right, I hear it just about every year.

Perhaps with Russell down back, Heath can get up onto a wing?

Anyway from what you have said, I am not sure you have seen much of Russell. He has really neat disposal by foot and IMO will definitely be in our regular 22. Not sure he will take our kick-outs, but if he does, it will be a better result than what BJ gets.

My thoughts:

Lynch - 20+
Young - 20+
Russell - 20+
Hudson - 5-7
Kennedy - 3-5
Grundy - 1-3
Martin - 1-3

At this stage I think Lynch is a better option than Grundy. Lynch will provide time, along with Hudson's coaching for Grundy to absorb and learn the rigors of AFL rucking. Put Grundy against young rucks but not the monsters at this stage, he's relatively new to the game so I would imagine has a lot to learn. Wonder what size the rucks where in the SANFL he rucked against.

I agree.....although he looks like he is built big - up against AFL giants he is probably still relatively skinny and needs a year or two to fill out. Im excited by him but lets be realistic

Grundy weighs around the same as the big ruckmen currently. I think Mumford is 105kg. Grundy is 100kg. I know there is a massive difference between weight and strength but I don't think he would be rag dolled around like other 18 yo ruck prospects.

Its why the second ruck role would suit him to a T. Barring Nic Nat, 2nd string ruckmen are generally average in the league now due to the preference to have a better forward. I doubt there is any 2nd stringer that would be able to dominate him. Roughead maybe???

I suppose we will find out in the year what the coaches think

Lynch - 20+
Young - 12-16
Russell - 8-12
Hudson - 3-5

Of the rest: one or two might bob up for a game or two
