Newman

Think next year could be his last particularly if he gets injuries or loses his spot and can't get back into the side. At the moment, I'd say he'd be in our bottom 4-6 players in the side and will be one of those who needs to fight tooth and nail to keep their spot. His leadership and experience will still be greatly needed around the club, even if he isn't playing in the seniors.

@Turka's earlier post was a gem and is spot on. When he eventually hangs up the boots, he should and will be remembered as a great servant of the club. Not the most talented or spectacular player to wear the jumper but one who played with as much courage and spirit as anyone.

A true reflection on a club is how it treats its champions that have given a lot to stay loyal. Make no mistake, regardless of stats Newman is a champion of the Richmond Football Club. He help steer this group and importantly made Hardwicks job easier by reinforcing his message.

In saying that i have seen in the past two years the transition has already started. IMO I think he will play the first say 5 games then from that period on be used as a sub. Keep him fresh for the last half to help get out boys back in the game if we are behind or to use his run and kicking to drive the win home.

Chris is a team man and I bet once he has retired will quickly become a assistant coach with us. He would thrive and inspire our guys further as a sub imo.

Unfortunately I dont believe Newman would make a good Sub, A good sub needs to have pace and flair with the ability to impacy games from the get go. Chris is more a soldier that does a job

Has great skills and decision making ability. Still does the job. If he plays in the 22, I'm happy. If he misses out and is a depth player, that suggests we're going very well.

Could Newman re invent himself as a Half Forward?
Good one on one, elite kicking kills and loves a goal from outside 50.

Would love the club to try him up there before we let him go. We are capable of taking him out of that back line now with Houli, Ellis, Morris and Vlastuin rotating through there.

He did do this a bit this year but seemed to get lost a little and didn't quite have the impact he should have.

Not with the Types we have selected this year , Gordon,Banfield,Lloyd,Lennon & McDonough,Knights,Edwards all Specialist Fowards that are younger(except Edwards) and natural opportunists .

The only position i can see Newman re inventing himself to remain another year would be as a lock down small defender, Which i personally dont think he is good at doing

I think 2014 will be Jake King,Oren Stephenson,A.Edwards & Chris Newman last year at Afl level

Tend to agree with you, if not that position than unfortunately i don't see him in our 22. Even in Round 1.
Not saying he didn't deserve it but Newman really did get a token game in the finals against Carlton. I don't think his from warranted a call up. If it were anyone else on the list they would not have played that game.

I think many are underselling Newman's attributes. Before he injuried himself on the EF he was one of our best players. I'd have him before Morris any day of the week. Sure he is getting older but when fit he plays IMO.

Agree. :thumbsu:

Whatever happens with Newman's footy next year, I hope he feels like he is treated with respect.
