foley and amrtin dont get tagged, cotch and lids do. there is a difference with a run with role as they tend not to be so tight. i cant remember who was on him v melb but mckensie is their tagger and frankly anyone else aint much chop. if newy doesnt then run enough to break the this supposed tag then he is not working hard enough which is what i said.

actually he is being covered. They covered this in one of the broadcasts of our games recently, saying we like to have Newman on his own to create play out of the backline and into the midfield. Realizing this, oppositions are now targeting him, knowing if they make him more accountable we struggle to get our run started.

Similar for Grigg and Houli. Oppositions have realized the way to hurt us isn't to take out our inside mids, but to focus on our guys who love the open spaces and give us the run/drive into the forward line. Doing this stops our run, drags us back to a stoppage game, which is exactly what we don't want.

he is a defender first and foremost for which i dont think he does all that well. i understand he will have run with players on these ball movers but if we lament that some of our players need to work past these lock downs then newy gets the same criticisms. so for me is he a defender or just a half back to create play? we are trying to have both but for me he stuck in the middle. he either doesnt defend all that well and doesnt get enough of the ball to create. i think this is the reason dea plays as they see him as the 'defender to take the mid fwd'. either way i just think he can do better. also being covered is different than a downright tag ie like mckensie from the dees and so he should still get the ball more. i would also say its the system we use that also needs to be better.

he's there to create play. how often these days do you see him get a job to do on someone?

This is pretty common BTW. Many sides play a LMID, and many have 5 man forward lines, so the old 6 on 6 in the backline is gone. Some players are they to fill space and to create play rather than mark a direct opponent.

well this is the problem. we create the plus 1 trying to get him as the player, so like lids he should be getting 30+ every week which he is not. then some clubs will try to match him up and make him defend and i just dont think he does it well enough.

Yes. Dea is essentially the anchor, the plan B if Newman gets caught out of position. Newman ain't getting anywhere near enough of the ball considering he is not locking down a forward. He's doing a lot of hand waving and finger pointing. More inside 50s required.

don't read too much into the possession stats for LMID. If he is doing quality delivery, it can be lower. A lot of the 30+ LMID possessions are the chip-chip-chip crap when they see-saw between the two half back flanks afraid to move forward.

Don't get me wrong, his form is off, and he isn't where he should be, but its wrong to say he should simply be able to break a tag. He's in the backline, and doesn't get the scope to run down a tag like Cotchin or Deledio.

This is more a coaching issue IMO. When Grigg, Houli, and Newman start being targeted, they need to either move them to a fresh position to hopefully free them up, or change their role to allow someone else to provide that function.

Everyone knows we love a free flowing game, and coaches have now shown it can be broken down by 1) forcing the stoppages per the Freo game, 2) forcing the players to take their kick rather than play on as Adelaide did, or 3) not allowing Houli/Grigg/Newman space. Its up to the box to overcome these tactics, and to date we have been doing it with mixed success.
