Newsgroups

Can anyone help me with Newsgroups server settings? I opened my Outlook Express (I use Outlook Office 2000 for my normal mail - can I get newsgroups through this?) and just entered my normal bigpond account info but when prompted to search for newsgroups it cannot find the server. I think it has something to do with the NNTP protocol - whatever that is.

Any assitance anybody could throw my way would be greatly appreciated.

Bigpond news server settings are slightly different to your Bigpond mail settings

Go to Tools>Accounts menu in Outlook Express

click on News Tab, then click on Properties button

the server name for Bigpond newsservers should be :

news.bigpond.com

make sure this is entered on the Server tab, on the Server Name line (and u can also enter it into General tab if u wish)

p.s.
on the advanced tab, everyting is unchecked, and the News (NTTP) Server Port Number is 119, however I think the system put this setting in once I successfully accessed the newsgroups

What is Xnews? Please elaborate. How do I set this up and what are its benefits?

It's a straight forward news reader, small as well, and it's easy to set up. Downloads binaries better than Outlook.

yes, just about anything other than Outlook Express should be used. Mind you, back in '96 MS News was a great newsreader, why they got rid of it is beyond me.
